For better or worse, the most interesting stuff I translate is related to the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. That section of the Jnr High New Horizons textbook I had to read aloud for 2 years still shits me blind 15 years later. "There they were, peaceful little Masahiro and Tomoko, just minding their own business on a lovely spring day, basking under an idyllic palm tree endemic to only Japan due to uniqueness of Japanese nature when a blinding light flashed in the sky and the children all melted and were murdered by Americans. Just why? Why did you do this to us?"Kids bug-eyed and sombre and tearful in class looking at me with baleful eyes. On my last day I shouldve read out "Japan annexed Korea in 1910 to kickoff their plans for world domination. For 35 years they subjugated the people of Asia through barbaric cruelty and raped an entire city named Nanking. Stop playing your warrior games on your phones for 10 minutes and look it up. You ain't the samurai warriors history wants you to believe. Your marauding army of invaders had their munitions supplied directly by Shinzo Abe's grandfather. They threw babies in the air and caught them on their bayonets for sport. Your homework is to ask your grandparents about any of this and watch them go strangely silent. Class dismissed, GTFO".

No doubt the consciousness level regarding Japanese atrocities among the Japanese is pretty much the same of most Americans in regards to their own in Vietnam and Hiroshima*, for that matter. Not sure why've the Goddess has put me in both places because I had a pretty consciousness of all that shit before even living here and there. Babies though, protect them in the womb and then melt their flesh before they see their first birthday. The majority of survivor videos I have done, especially over the last decade, were kids and teenagers in Aug. 1945, just randomly caught on their way to their "student labor mobilization job", already living in abject poverty because food, medicine, everything goes to the war effort, and then BOOM! All for the US to tell the Soviets "Back off Boris!!"
It's kinda chilling that Kishida is from Hiroshima, where the Mayor and other politicians have had to be as anti-nuclear/"pro-peace" as possible, but Kishida may oversee the restarting of nuclear power plants, removing the self-defense requirement from the Constitution and, mayhaps, inviting US nuke subs or ships into Japanese waters!
*I will have something funny in this regard - manana hopefully...

Well, we made it over to Tokyo and back and despite best efforts managed not to become contaminated with CROVID-69.
Things are the same, stuff is cheap, people are nice, food is great.
I was most surprised by the voluntary adherence to masking. Outside, by self, on bike, no one around for 50 yards? Better have a mask on.
I guess I was also interested in flight policy. It would seem to me that Science would have determined that, on a plane, you really should, or really do not need to wear a mask, but apparently in the US it's not needed but going to Asia, it's Serious Business.
I guess my uneducated take would be you should, but Americans would prioritize not being told what to do over being told what to do even if it's for our own good, so you don't have to wear masks on planes here because "freedom."
Or, maybe Japanese people are insane and you don't really need em on flights.
I am willing to listen to Medical Scientists, but I myself am not one.
Bought records.
Drank wild chu-hais.
Had fun.
Had an actual vacation!
Have recovered from jetlag.
Not bad!

Had an actual vacation! Have recovered from jetlag. Not bad! After open cock surgery, I was told by my surgeons in Japan to wear a mask all fall and winter when using public transportation or at family gatherings and the like. They were both doctors who I trust knew something about what advice they were giving me. I just did what they said. Here in Canada, my wife's many doctors have told her and me to mask up since her first round of chemo many moons ago. With so many underlying conditions in the USA, I am surprised how many people, my family included, don't mask up. And some of my family members have died from COVID-19. It seems that COVID-19 denial is not a heath precaution. But what do I know? I am not a scientist so what possibly could I know? People keep reminding me that I am not a scientist when I tell them what my doctors told me. This "new age" and "homeopath" road to "natural" medicine is a direct path to the 12th-century. Big Pharma has kept me alive for 15 years. I laugh every single time I hear somebody say that "Big Pharma" bullshit. Yes, they are profit-driven. Yes, they are evil. Yes, we are also evil. So I'll take a drug that keeps me alive. My wife takes drugs that keep her alive. Without them, I would have been dead at 38. My wife would have been dead at 41. Only the healthiest of people that I know go on and on about "Big Pharma" in front of me. Do you want to see my cock surgery scar? It's pretty fucken big. Do you want to see the scars on my wife's head from multiple neurosurgeries? Yeah, "Big Pharma" is so evil. I get it. Death doesn't have mercy. Homeopathy is no substitute for an oncologist. The world is mad. Sadly, very little has changed since the 12th-century in terms of humans adapting to changes in their environments. Hobbes, whose writings astounded me and enraged me when I was young, is so much smarter than I could even imagine being.

I go back and forth on this a lot, and it’s not really fair. Whenever I don’t like something, I can say “Well in Japan…” and it’s different for some reason that does or doesn’t make any sense and maybe I like it a little better or a little worse.
I knew when I moved there I’d always miss some stuff from my hometown, and that if I moved back, I’d always miss some stuff from Tokyo.
Well, I was right. This is not solvable, in fact, I’d argue it’s a luxury problem to have, all things considered. The world is awful and terrible things happen constantly.
Whatever my tiny daily micro-problem is, it's easy to long for the simplicity of living an unacknowledged existence on the other side of the earth in a tiny apartment with oddly very few daily decisions to make.
I hope this makes sense. I don't actually want that, it was 20 years ago and I was a different person and if I had followed that path I'm sure I'd be bitching about it now too and pining for the life I actually have, but it's a very convenient back pocket option if I don't care for something here to be able to mentally write off the entire country in favor of a different one -- that I lived in, and liked, but also had its own problems. It's not practical and I don't have a real solid conclusion, it's just mentally lazy to be able to refer to the best parts of living a very different life and contrast it to whatever short term item I don't care for at the moment.

I would say about 1/3 of my friends who have been in Japan 20+ years kind of do things the Japanese way, which eventually includes going to a temple and doing the appropriate thing at the appropriate time.
There's no pressure. No one tells you do to that, but it made me realize hmm, there are chill religions, and not so chill religions.
Shinto people, famously Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, these guys don't bother you. It really seems like the Christians and Islamics feel the need to get in your face and do wars and outlaw abortion and generally try and get in your business.
So, I think they're bad.
And the chill religions are okay.
I think this is a wildly unpopular opinion, not here, but in life, like, I can't tell my Midwestern Irish Catholic mother that.
But... that's the conclusion I've drawn from my life thus far.

"Haha, what a cute little name for what must be a frivolous little nothing of a medical condition..."
Meanwhile the sufferer is living in torture.

ffs MiniMe rocks up at 8pm on New Years Eve from Tokio and announces she's staying here for 2 weeks.
My Nov and Dec daydreamed plan to unwind from high tension mode and lie on rug and play records for my precious 12 consecutive day winter hols shot in the fucking brains.
High tension mode rides straight thru til I have to go back to fucking work for 2023's high tension.
Now I have to revert to Father Mode and care for a 27-year old adult child.
I love chatting and joking with Minime but ffs kind of rude.
Then she decides to "work from home" (her "job" appears to be laughing on the internet and watching movies then taking a break on the sofa) from our living room and we're supposed to just give up everything to accommodate her as she commandeers the room.

ha ha, yes that big cock is exactly what people become when they get behind the wheel of one of those giant fuck off trucks. that type of huge largely unnecessary motor vehicle has become increasingly more common in australia over the last ten years. seems like a lot of people have taken the "if you can't beat em, join em' attitude. to the point where if they're not the majority of cars on the road, they're not far off it. ...and they all think they're fucking 'king of the road' in their fuck off truck. tailgating anyone that dares be on their road, lights blaring right in your rear vision mirror day and night. move over muthafucka caint you see i'm important.
arrrghh!!!! i hate every single mother fucking cunt that drives one of these things...except maybe outback jack and farmer joe who might on occasion actually need one.
bring on the era of small self driving hydrogen vehicles i say, even if only to bring these pricks down a peg or twenty.

Googled a few old pals and acquaintances and was struck at how successful they are now. Bigwig tenured professors, CEO's etc.
I guess I should feel jealous.
I'm just a part-time jobber messing around idiotically on tiny, tiny internet message boards. And I have been for 20 fucking years now. Less phD, more ffs dickhead.
But then today when, as usual, I'm at home lying on my rug with my fucking godhead hifi oozing out sumptuous and magisterial music, it struck me; I would be doing the exact same thing even if I was a billionaire. Lying on my rug playing my records. Lear jetting to holidays on Epstein Island, exotic destinations etc...... fuck that shit. I would wayyyy rather just be lying here with Brian Eno's "Taking Tiger Mountain" LP massaging my earcock and ballz.
If I was a billionaire maybe the hifi would be a bit fancier.
Maybe even the rug too.
But really, ffs, I would be doing the exact same thing.

Despite being basically allergic to alcohol the radio rental Trouble and Strife brought this home for Xmas/NY
She was fooled by the bit where it said "honey" taste or some shit in the reviews. She is desperate to be an alkie. Drinks that zero% beer by the truckload. Anyway it'll be me that has to drink this rocket fuel. You can have yer laughs but I've never actually tasted whisky. Both parents were raging alkies so wasnt keen to overly activate that gene and follow their road to ruin
Looked up review and oMG what a load of old wank "whisky bloggers" come out with. "A hint of peachwood amidst the scent of forest-fired dingo corpses."
Thinking a pisstake Gunston Wix homepage is the go here ffs
*edit: opened the bottle and took a sniff. Smells like cough syrup mixed with petrol.
Not drinking this shit.

I'd like to give a quick shout out to how annoying America is. Healthcare. First, 100 decisions, do you want PPO or HMO and is your doctor in network and do you have insurance which is linked to your job? Oh my god what if my tax dollars go to pay for healthcare for someone who doesn't have a job!??!?! Seriously, I would kill myself!!!
I signed up for FSA, flexible suck ass? For $500 the theory is this is your pre-tax dollars, that you estimate, that can be used for healthcare, but if you don't use it, you lose it -- why is this a decision I'm faced with? I had a baby in 2023 so how could I possibly spend less than $500?
Well, it took like 8 hours for me to get my $500 back -- fuck you, keep the tax money.
God, this country is the worst.

Dins last night with an old pommy pal from the trenches. He's fulltime at a high school. 6 days a week, 9am to about 7 or 8pm. Only 3 or so classes a day but he has to be on site. Wife and son, guess he's on a good salary with solid pension. Bugger that for a laugh. I'd rather have my hodge podge of halfarse part time gigs. Dude has: - Zero time for lying on the rug playing records
- Zero time for jacking it.
- Zero time for lying around quietly reading a book
- Zero time for binging telly shows
- Zero time for watching the footy all day Saturday.
Of course, the laugh will be on me when I reach retirement age flat-arse broke and he can live the life of Ryan.
