Do you ever give them a spin? I'd be too petrified I7d scratch the cunts and affect their resale value.

You know, I guess I picked some stuff up working at a record store for a few years. They're surprisingly durable, especially as compared to say CDs. If you scratch your CD, that's kind of it. If there's gunk in your LP and it skips, you can probably use your thumbnail to pop it out and you'll just hear a bit of a pop as it goes by -- but it'll still play.
The nerdiness of this is relatively new to me. I think it all stems from comic books? This notation system of NM, M-, etc. And sure, if you do the thumb thing look, your record was nowhere near NM- to begin with and if it's a $300 LP guess what, your copy is $150 at best.
I do think of this when I go to a friend's house that seriously has $2500 punk 7"s. I mean what's the $ per second value of listening to this? At some point, I'm so naturally cheap, I just have to disassociate.
I have a Technics 1200 and a decent needle. The other thing I learned at the store is in this day and age if you play something 1000 times with a decent needle, you're fine. Records don't actually wear out, in any practical sense.

LOL Japan Post is NEVER going to resume service to the US if they see these pics from LA. Freight trains getting targeted and looted. The disintegration of civil society in America. The experiment of pure and free capitalism reaching a grisly nadir.

One idea I really liked at a Tokyo Bookoff (which one was it? The one thats a few floors above a clothes shop on ground floor and a 100 metres from Disk Union? Shinjuku?) was their colour coding of cd spines. Never seen that before and thought it was a bit gimmicky at first but it was amazingly effective. Not alphabeticized, colourised, by changing hues of cd spines. The eye just races across the titles so much more easily. ps, in absence of gaijin flipper cunts strip-raiding the places, D.U stores have now assumed this property in my imagination:

Found a recycled shop down road that is mainly records. YESSS! Young kid running it, good on him, bit of entrepreneurialialsm among the younger generation, very goddamn rare. Prices look affordable, some nice stuff.
Thought I'd test his buy and sell policy by taking 30 7" singles in for a quote. Other places would be between 1,000 and maybe 2,000 yen. Fine with the lower end for a young fella looking to supplant the dinosaur museums around town. Anyway the kid takes about 15 fucking minutes to run them allllllll through his fucking phone then writes down everything and presents his quote;
220 yen.
That's the total.
For 30 records.
I thought he was missing a zero.
Are you fucking high boy? The fuck would I agree to that for? I can get more than that for the cheapest one of them on discogs. Stupid prick. 3 months from now it'll be "whyyyyyy doesnt anyone bring their old stuff in for me? Why do they take it to the other record shops?" Cos we can get 20x the price down the road, dipshit. Word will get around and his store way out in the burbs will wither on the vine. So dumb. Shell out 1,000, 1,500 yen for the 30 records and he would've had a repeat customer. Probably for life.

The funny thing is taking time and doing math for that. If you just say look it's 10 yen a record unless something pops out to me, and more or less take it or leave it, fine, no, and thanks for being quick about it.
Somehow super Japanese to take 15 minutes to arrive at exactly 220 yen. Bet you could have negotiated up and squeezed another 10 out of him, who knows, maybe upwards of Y323 in trade in value!

The stoopid part was he didnt even look at the condition of a single record. Let alone give one a spin to check the sound. Just straight on the phone to yahoo auctions.

Years ago there was a store that bought used CDs based solely on condition - new = $5. I went to the $1 bin of another store, grabbed 5 sealed SHITTY CDs and resold them for $25. That store was going out of business anyway, I should have repeated that trade many more times.... Oddly, I specifically remember this was one of the titles:

Years ago there was a store that bought used CDs based solely on condition - new = $5 there were a few secondhand record shops in sydney that did this. huge multi level shops with records crammed into every available space, with absolutely no order or filing system. everything opera, rock, jazz, classical, punk, ethnic etc etc all mixed in side by side in the racks. they used plaster big ugly hard to peel off price stickers on the covers and scribble the price on the inside of the covers and on the record labels in pencil so there could be no switching shenanigans. the pricing was indiscriminate and simple - mint $7 good $5 fair $3 poor $1 'ashwoods' in pitt street was my favourite. spent many a long day digging in there and still have some great rare records i picked up for next to nothing. with their ugly stickered covers and scribbled price labels to remind me of ye goode ol' daze.

It really is interesting how stores work these days. I'm now seeing stores in the US with, for example, a section of reasonably selected Japanese 7"s. I get it, this has to be one of the last vestiges of knowledge/mark-up.
Why would people go to a store? I can think of a few reasons: 1) I'm relatively new to buying records, basically on some level have too much disposable income for my own good, and will walk around and be like wow, Fleetwood Mac AND the Stooges? For just $70 on 180G? 2) I'm insane and have a problem and can't help but go to record stores and think I will find a "score." 3) I kind of know this is sort of like, how society works and it's kind of like a cafe and something to do and maybe I'll buy a magazine or mug on my way out.
In other words if you really just want new records here and there you can just have them shipped to you for barely more money than you pay at a store, and as a store, it's very hard to pay rent and employees on the paltry mark-up of new products, and the used market is 1) annoying and 2) completely on discogs so I think you're starting to see stores do like a curated selection, record buying trips, combos of shipping from abroad so like, in a very practical sense, if I want to get some dumb glam 7" that is $3 in europe, maybe I can pay the store $12 instead of $20 for personal overseas shipping. Or, along with that, maybe I don't really know about some of these genres but I know the store is cool and has a generous listening policy. If you have a Japanese record that I can probably get for Y100 there, am I really going to fly there to save $9 if you have it out for $10?
These stores seem to be catering to all the reasons people would go to them, you can hang out, learn about and hear something new and interesting, and buy it for a price that is reasonable but still allows for a mark-up that's better than new inventory.
