I've never liked the phrase because I like what I like, but of late I've been picking up the occasional album/single of a track that I remembered fondly (or even just intensely) from my childhood and I am mildly reluctant to admit to some of them.
The weirdest ones and the hardest to get (for under $100 a disc) were "Words" by F.R. David and "Here Comes the Man" by Boom Boom Room. Neither of these seemed to be on the public's radar in Australia (Boom Boom Room's only CD pressing was in Germany - the track was huge in South Africa!). My parents had "Super Trouper" by Abba and so I got that too, but of course I read on the stevehoffman forums and ended up pursuing some audophile's recommended pressing (it sounds fucking amazing for the 5 minute doses I can take of Abba).
The F.R David CD is just about the synthpoppiest thing ever. Most of contemporary retro synthwave takes a few elements from the genre and cranks them into something you'd never actually hear in the era, but this dude actually sounds like it.
The weirdest thing about the Boom Boom Room track is that it sounds like it was a massive hit less from its familiarity but more from how it covered so many '80s sonic and stylistic bases: big synth glissandos, roaring sax solo, laconic baritone, all of that. Back in SA it was huge and it got used in advertising and even got a cover version by some local band. Pretty much a nothing anywhere else though.

I have a Toto mini-CD of "Africa". I want literally nothing else by them except their rather excellent Dune soundtrack.

That's weird, never heard of the Boom Boom Room or ever seen any of their records in stores. My GP would be the first couple of Primus albums Pat Benatar "We Belong" 7" for that drum sound that gives my Sonab speakers a giant stiffy. I have a Toto mini-CD of "Africa". It's weird how these things trigger us goodly or badly. This takes me right back to 1982 and nothing but bad memories that I do not want to revisit c/o this goddamn song.

OHFFS, I'm only up to "A" and already came across this 12"... A Flock of Seagulls are great. Nothing guilty there. Some naff tracks but I never skip them when they appear on shuffle. Immaculate guitars.

Most '80s nostalgia music puts me in the mind of a 10 year-old boy on summer holiday who just got a pair of goggles and flippers for Christmas and is going to be helping his older brother go prawn pumping at low tide.

And let me just pre-empt any suggestion that a-ha was some corny one-hit wonder with some of the best pop songs of all time.

If I could disassociate myself from the baggage of being subjected to the A-HA radio barrage of the 80's the band might have a chance with me. But I just can't. (Boom Boom Room's only CD pressing was in Germany - the track was huge in South Africa!). I became curious. www.discogs.com/master/250688-Boom-Boom-Room-StretchPuzzling stuff. Band released 1 album which was pressed a grand total of ONCE on LP and ONCE on cd. Damnit that is weird. Big in SA yet acquiring a copy of their album mustve been an utter, utter pain in the arse.
Nuthin in B and C but this 7" under the D's has survived numerous culls.......

Nuthin in B and C but this 7" under the D's has survived numerous culls....... Weirdly enough I recently acquired the first two Deacon Blue albums after having a memory attack from the kitchen radio of the man who takes care of Scarlett Johansson in Under the Skin. My brother was in charge of the school record library so I got exposed to more mature music than was generally on the radio. I recall everyone having a raging boner for The Waterboys at the time Deacon Blue and Prefab Sprout were big, but I only know "Whole of the Moon" and it only registers "okay" in my mind.
My trick to finding rare albums is to bookmark the barcode on eBay and refresh daily until it pops up for a decent price, as Discogs sellers usually try and charge whatever the maximum previous sale price was. I paid a lot more than I'd have liked, but I'm pleased I got it for about half of whatever some dickhead is charging on the Scogs of Duh.

F.
F is for 1982 Fleetwood Mac.
I will fight you over how good L.Buckingham's songs are on this record.

yeah thats another 7" I still have here that's survived multiple culls. Thats odd, on the rare occasions that I remmeber big ol' nasty FeeBay even still exists, what I'm after always seems to be double the price of the same copy on the scogs. Maybe its you crafty barcode bookmarking (?) pricks hoovering up all the cheap shit. Remember there used to be that 1 cent cd ebay seller back in the day? Mary and Jane? Dick and Tom? Something like that. They had fahhhking millions of cd's for sale.

Works well for CDs since barcodes really started becoming a thing around the time CDs peaked.
I bookmark (favourite) Discogs pages of things I want too, and put all my Discogs bookmarks in a folder, then Ctrl+click on the folder and I can see what's available for less whenever I remember to check.

These days it’s almost any rock music from the 60’s? Maybe being into this kinda retro shit was considered cool in certain circles during the 90’s and 00’s, but today all that music feels painfully corny. I still like a lot of it, so what can ya do?

Saturday Night Fever soundtrack
I love the harmony of the Gibb brothers. "More Than a Woman" and "How Deep is Your Love" are flawless pop songs.

Imagine: It's 1993 and a young nikkeisindex has only heard Operation Ivy 2 years ago. The introspective lyrics, the punk/ska influenced stylings of the Clash, the early Lookout! Records connection, wow, and now 2 of these guys are in a new band, let's go see them, I wonder if they'll play any OpIvy songs!
DRINKIN IN THE ALLEY! RIDIN' ON THE BUS! MOHAWK GIRL! OI! OI! OI!
Gee, I guess not.
But, I have to admit this punk algorithm appeals to me.
Time Bomb?
I don't want to say I think it's good, but... they hacked my brain, I do like it.

I don't want to say I think it's good, but... they hacked my brain, I do like it. It's that first consciousness isnt it. Its roots are deep. #no_shameAnother one of my guilty 7"s thats survived numerous culls. Weirdly - very weirdly - this was the song that got me into The Who. In 1985 I'd never heard them before this. A very odd gateway iHomo

We had this on vinyl when I was 4 years old, and as a piece of nostalgia it's kind of ecstatic. This was state-of-the-art synthwork back when it was recorded and it's dated nicely to something like Wendy Carlos levels of retro cool.
Oddly, the only CD copy I could find ON EARTH was a random classified ad in New Zealand. Bless the heart of the fellow who bothered sending it to me - I had to use Wells Fargo to pay him. I just checked and a few copies are available on eBay now.
Most of it I can live without, but this interpretation of the Widor Toccata is kind of wondrous. The bass is monstrous.
The vinyl artwork is great.

The Doors. I could listen to any doors album at anytime and i know it makes me a corny freak. All i associate with the doors is that cringey oliver stone movie, but i think the tunes are great and the lyrics, while not great poetry, are pretty good rock lyrics.

Heard Tomita? he does a similar thing with his synths and classics. I bought a pile of them from the $1 bin just on the jackets alone. His takes drove me around the bend after a while and i sold the lot.

ha, I like how duders record store has 200 records in total. Couple of the Japanese Disk Union reps turn up one afternoon and buy the whole lot and ship his entire inventory and livelihood off to Tokyo. How you going to pay rent then Mr knowitall Doors guy? tl/dr I am probably being overly serious given the subject matter of this comedy clip

I remember knowing a guy down the road who had a few record stores, some of which were holes in the wall with probably 500 or less albums in them. Somehow he afforded a home, had kids, all that. Different times.
