Slowdive - Souvlaki Ride - Nowhere Curve - Cuckoo
Special mention to Smashing Pumpkins' first two albums which were a starting point in high school that got me into shoegaze. I think some of the tracks there are some of the best shoegaze ever produced.

Slowdive - Souvlaki Ride - Nowhere Curve - Cuckoo Curve and Ride never clicked with me. Agree on that 1st Smashing Pumpkins lp. Even though I totally gave up on the Mellon Collie thing I wouldve said Swervedriver - Raise lp would be in my Mt Rushmore but having reacquired it recently, maybe not. Some of my Roy Montgomery lp's might be close. Yo La Tengo could also muster a solid shoegaze comp picked from their zillion albums my current picks: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Slowdive - Souvlaki Bailter Space – Robot World Les Thugs - As Happy As Possible. no one thinks of this band as shoegaze yet this lp sounds like it fits the bill to me.

Ahh Le Olde Shoe Gaze...Totally agree it's the "arguably" shogazers that are my faves. Love the idea of considering As Happy As Possible in the genre, great fucking album, like if the Buzzcocks had gone on to invent shoegaze instead of that new romance New Order crap (jk)...Comp of YLT sounds groovy too but my favorite album by them, Painful, is probably the gaziest all the way through. Remember coming on to LSD listening to it a few times at least. I guess bands like Spaceman 3 and Loop are more considered psyche but the former had to have an influence on some 90s gazers. Some will say the latter merely ripped off the former... Pop Group cover! And of course they put out a new album last year ffs wft www.discogs.com/master/2564054-Loop-SonancyI had a roommate who listened to Ride when their early albums - early '90s came out but they never really grabbed me until the last few years. Googling around, I see the genre is much wider than the CIA-edited Wikipedia... For example, Fuck, I am digging that. Found it on this Reddit thread. Just click and scroll on it Sprauge, don't be scared. Or maybe you can only see it if logged in to Reddit... https://www.reddit.com/r/shoegaze/comments/4i5dcv/sludgegazestonergaze/ blackgaze?

Speaking of shoegaze i have been listening a bunch lately to Pygmelion by Slowdive. One of their best and one of the weirdest shoegaze records ever. Goes beyond rock in certain ways. Nice shinmering stuff.

Looking into this band now. Sounds like this 1st LP and the 1st 4 ep's were the go then they fell off?

Agree on that 1st Smashing Pumpkins lp. Even though I totally gave up on the Mellon Collie thing. Have done a total 180 on this opinion. For a 2xCD it only has about 10% filler for me (usually the most raucous songs which, from this band, dont seem to work for me), all the rest is madly inventive and eclectic. The sheer volume of ideas brilliantly executed here is starting to make me think this is the GenX Pet Sounds ffs...

I have only been listening to later Ride recently - it's different from the early stuff (more "polished" I guess) but still really dig it. Like if Oasis were good - haha

Friday evening, de-stressing to this lesser played by me Les Thugs album, or Les Tuugs as a French man corrected me, rightfully so, outside that Boris show. The first track is truly just pure power shoegaze.
ETA: Randomly ran across this - do subtitles exist wft?

I only found out recently that Nowhere was recorded live in studio, which blew my mind as I'd always assumed it took a million dubs to get that massive sound.

What say the forii experts on this discogs take? www.discogs.com/digs/music/essential-shoegaze-albums/Usually these discogs takes read very much like the journo is on the outside looking in but this one seems about right? ps Swervedriver; is Mezcal Head really better than Raise?

I'd put Curve's Cuckoo over Swervedriver's albums all day, I'd probably choose Head Over Heels over Heaven or Las Vegas and I don't know that Verve album, which I therefore think I'd replace with Ringo Deathstarr's self-titled LP.

High praise for Curve, might have to revisit them. Had a 12" that didnt do much for me. Honestly think I dismissed them so quickly cos the main woman looks like a supermodel which made me suspicious, "oh, another NME push for a pretty band" Head Over Heels isnt the most accessible from memory. Might have to give it another burl when I get home
