It's time to get classy, you bogan shart-knuckled cunts
Classical music.
I dont know shit about the genre but its a great time to be a fan. Mountains of LP's available in stores for a buck a pop. I reckon it might sound epic on a big amp and big fucking dalek speakers. Smooth strings and silky violins and caressing hornage etc. Where do i start.
20 votes each. What a pole. WHAT A POLE!

My knowledge is limited, but the '87 Giulini recording of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" is one of my favourite things ever. The half-hour finale is incredible. The backstory of the piece is that Mahler had just encountered some recently translated Chinese poetry and, after a few personal tragedies, decided to set some of it to music. If you have a big sound system it'll be a real workout for it. Interestingly it was considered too dark for decades and not played oftem, combined with the difficulty of performing the finale, which is rather free-form, but tastes changed and it's now considered one of the greats. Apparently one of his conductors at the time said he thought it was good, but that he was worried everyone would go home and shoot themselves afterwards. If you give it a listen, try and follow along with the lyrics, as they're this amazing mix of simple and profound.

The DG CD was a DDD mastering, and if you have it at a convincing volume you can occasionally here a page turn in the orchestra during quiet parts.

My pops and step-mom traumatized me with Classical and Opera...I listened to this whilst on Peyote once and it was swell.

no shostakovich, no satie, what is this shit? Well you didn't highlight the lack of Schnittke or Pärt, so now I'm better than you.

You're right, thats one of the ones I remember from when I did this 10 years ago. Seems like every 10 years I'll buy 10 $1 classic LP's then lose patience with them and move them on

Some part of me thinks you would enjoy Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" a fair bit. You're right, thats one of the ones I remember from when I did this 10 years ago. Seems like every 10 years I'll buy 10 $1 classic LP's then lose patience with them and move them on Classical music is just too big a field with too many variables like performer and conductor etc, so I tend to find a piece or two that I enjoy by a given artist and get familiar with it. The best stuff is remarkable and, really, pop, rock and jazz have nothing on it, but it's hard to approach. And good grief, the affectations of the top-level appreciators are just unbearable. The black-and-white pictures of some wanker with his his eyes closed and brow furrowed as he wrestles fire from the gods conducting an 18th century piece for what has to be the ten-thousandth time in history, spare me. Tar captured this shit so well. I don't have much in my collection for a similar reason my laundry occasionally overflows the basket.
