Thought about pulling the trigger on this LP, $6, on the Florida's Dying label.
Had a listen, left me cold.
I think the thrill is gone. So much of that stuff Termbo praised to the high heavens, I just couldnt hear a goddamn thing.
Maybe I'm too old.
ps I wonder where all the Termbo garage TURKEYS went after their scene fell to bits?

Both Jack White and The Black Lips played Vietnam in the last year or so. I never thought much of The White Stripes - I heard them when still on Sympathy, nor much of the Black Lips - but everyone said you had to see them live, see the dude pee in his own mouth or something. The Black Lips played some festival at a beach city and played a club in Saigon midweek. I might have gone to the club gig for laughs but we were in Penang that week actually. One or two of the Black Lips were cancelled in the midst of that Burger Records cancelling. Whatever.
Anywho, I am not sure how much Garage Turkeyism applies to TB, especially the later years. Lots of obscure tastes and music were bandied about. Coinkadinkly, I happened to click on YT yesterday right when a live stream of a reformed Mystery Girls was starting. I always like them more than the Black Lips and even though they seemed to take more from '60s bands in a straight revivalist, they just seemed to me to have really great songs, more mature than the BL...
That Mystery Girls stream was on Termbro stalwart Brad X's channel - responsible for this eternal hit.
I guess there are certain nits to be picked regarding "garage" - don't all bands start in the garage? And there is a heavy association with "sixties garage" so, in my mind, it really relates more to '60s revivalists like, say
Than, say,
Everyone's mileage may vary

I guess..... not a rabid fan but I get it for a live experience, wanna pound some beers and get rowdy? Seems like a fine soundtrack.
The true "purist" stuff like ONLY three chords ONLY stomp beat -- I mean, maybe I learned something from participating in the revival of another genre but I guess when you stick that strictly to the purity and rules of a genre it's either - not interesting or - the people who love it pop the biggest boner of all time for it

I think 95% of garage punk records put out sound the exact same and then there’s a 5% that excite me in a way it used to. I’m also in a garage punk band so I try to hype up the scene since I still have skin in the game.. there is a good scene in the Midwest, but I do recognize that almost all my favorite bands to see / play with live aren’t really garage rock at all, at least purposefully. Big Neck records has been putting out my favorite stuff from this genre as of late

Now there's a band who might sound dated now? They sure dont get referenced much anymore. Another incredible bin scab back in the day from my local psych/jazz record store vendor who didnt know about the In The Red label. 1st 4 Lost Sounds lp's for aboot $3 a pop fuck me my stiffy almost went clean thru the shop ceiling

I've popped on some Lost Sounds semi-recently and they still sound pretty reet to me and I imagine (hope) there are kids somewhere digging on them...I suppose Gonerfest is a good representation of whatever modern Garage Punk beith goner-records.com/pages/gonerfestI know and like a lot of the new and newish bands that are playing this year, and have been playing over the last few years... Was just jamming these guys yesterday. They swing between raging HC to more rawkish/metal moves like this new tune. These guys prolly will hit you as generic - unmemorable straight out of 2007 or something - but they really grab me. Old timer headliners are Ohsees, Gories and Mummies so my and YMMV with those legends or zeros or assholes or???

Lock thread, grampa farted! I was scared you might click on those - I was talking about the second band but also should amend YMMV to YMMVW(ildly) Don't even bother with this unless your blood pressure is too low...

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear. SOMEONE HAS SOLD OUT. FIRE UP THE HALOGENS. SCOUR THE GRoUNDS, RELEASE THE HOUNDS, SOMEONE TELL TIM. Do kids these days even give a shit about selling out? Our gen sure did. Massive weeping and gnashing in MRR. Jawbreaker, how could you DO this to me? Wah wah. TAKE THE $$$$$ Your precious Scene Brownie Points are IRREDEEMABLE in the hard scrabble world of power bills and rent payments. TAKE THE $$$$$ Wonder how much "COFFINS" would have made from Tooheys for that brief wee ad? 20K? I'd negotiate. "Instead of 20k, how about you give us 40k worth of your product, spread out over the next 20 years and we'll call it evens."ps I have no idea what "Tooheys" tastes like but, for some reason, I'm sure F.Uckface would look down on it.....

i know selling out ain't really a thing kids give a shit about. but ffs, surely you gotta have some dignity? yeah yeah, i know, you can't buy a snazzy little city run around car with dignity. but is bending over grabbing your ankles and taking it from anyone who offers you 20k really the way to go?
probably.
you got me all wrong dawley. believe it or not. i don't give one fuck about anyone selling out. i mean IF you have done something and someone is willing to pay you to use it. then good for you i say. the only effect those middle class hipster wankers and their sped up boogie rock have on me is to reach for the remote mute button when it comes on. i'm sure all their boof head mates think they're great. just not my thing.
tooheys is the ubiquitous mass produced beer in new south wales. its the hard working mans go to cause its cheap and easy to find. flavour wise its pretty bland normal beer flavoured beer. i'd rather drink it than all the fruity boutique micro brewery ipa over priced hipster beers that are everywhere here. taking an ever increasing slice of the beer market. ...and that why tooheys and the other big breweries are desperately trying to find a way to appeal to the young hipster market with ads like those.

^^^ anyway, the selling out thing was supposed to be about someones integrity and principles, wasn’t it? its not about making money for selling work. thats just commerce. letting someone use your stuff for something you are strongly against...thats selling out.
so boys n girls, the lesson is, if you don’t have any integrity or principles you can’t possibly sell them out.

What's funny about the commercial is they don't use their music and they don't have a female vocalist. If they did, would they be bigger than Amyl and the Nitrates? They don't even speak, so, as I remember it, they can't get an actor's union card ffs...
For whatever reasons, and there are many, I like stupid sped-up boogie woogie, or the generic "rawk" - for which I would get pilloried on termbo if I dared to unironically claim to love the Dragons or the Black Halos but I am not going to mount some court case in front of faceless jerks, well a few...And if I pointed to Joe Carducci's "Rock and the Pop Narcotic" for support, it would be more pillorying because people there hated it, most recently, near the end, I was taken to task for the retrograde anti-disco ergo anti-black and gay sentiments therein...Alas, there goes the last defense to the idea of a separate and independent aesthetic with it's own standards, having little to do with "Marketability" or "pop sense"...etc. Of course, then someone would just post a Wurm or Paperbag song and say haha right, Carducci looooves this shite! Alas, such is virtual slap fighting over music, eh?
then there is Meltzer's heavy tome on the subject. Unreadable? A long stoned-out joke of a phd thesis? Meltzer has gone on to jazz only baby and the weirder outer the better
On the Nurse with Wound "list" !
But never forget!
Hollywood is so far from BOC...
Termbore went crazy when some car company got all up into garage rock and whatnot for a minute in the naughts. After Green Day, White Stripes and culture reach a dead-end in terms of novelty. How many father-son or daughter couples went to see The Punk Rock Kiss at the LA Civic a few years ago? Many moons ago, a friend coined the term "musical slut" and sure, I'll take it, I mean I do draw some lines like "no anal" and whatnot...no relation to my tramp stamp except metaphysically.
And not trying gotcha whataboutism, this just popped into my mind but I am sure we can all agree this guy is too big to fall.
oh yeah it's actually pretty gross so I will just close that tab and try to forget about it...
ETA: This was a year before his stroke...and directed by Todd Haynes!

The whole DiY/early post-punk or however you want to lump the bands are really just garage punk bands also. Great genre to get lost in and check out who sprouted from some of the bands. The banner of whatever those bands are/aren't...supposedly loved by Br'klyn hipster in the early 2010s...say wot?

onion was the 'indy' subsidiary of rick rubins american recordings label.
i got that lp when it came out and was singing its praises to friends etc. but i think ron houses vocals put people most off.
just looked it up on discogs. the cheapest vinyl copy is $40usd, would part with mine for $15
the other notable release on onion was this v-3's photograh burns which goes for roughly the same buxx, but i aint selling. yet.

There was a reason I never posted in the music threads. Think I read that Angry Samoans Mike these days exclusively likes bubble gum pop like Britney Spears. Where does that fit in your pin-pricked drawer of rolodexed cuntlery?
