I had one TV (a 46" Sony) for 14 years. Over the last six months I've had three!
I first bought a Samsung 85", which was a nicely made device but had very blotchy blacks. I returned it and spent some extra cash on a Sony that had better reviews but was on a similar tier. Less blotchy, but not perfect, so I just figured I had lost the old LCD panel lottery. Noticed a purple blotch in the corner that was showing in dark scenes, and so I took some snaps and Sony (I bought direct from them via eBay) asked for a few more using specific settings. They agreed to repair under warranty, and then the other day messaged to say said no repair would be done, have the latest model as a replacement instead. Huge improvement, uniform black and some slightly improved HDR functionality.
Huge win, so thanks Sony!

I believe you are generally supposed to have the tweeters at you ear-height in the listening position.

Haha, there's a LOT of this stuff going on in audiophile tech.

My interest in vinyl always goes something like this:
1: Well, that's nice, I bet playing records on that would be very satisfying. Imagine the juicy thump and crackle lowering that needle.
2: I could own a copy of every CD in my wishlist for $36,000 US.

Another moranic hifi discovery on my amp today: The "Source" dial and its "Direct" vs "Tone" setting. I usually just put an lp/tape on, flip back and forth between the 2 settings, whichevers loudest, meh, that'll do. The "Tone" usually seemed quieter and muffled. Today for tapes I tried dolby off and "Tone" but adjusting by turning it up a bit. Bingo. Suddenly any shrillness is gone and the "tone" sounds way better. Who knew such a thing would happen at the setting marked "Tone"? WHO? The Kyuss tape which I dont think I'd even ever made it to the end of due to the relentless cymbal wash, suddenly I could hear all the other stuff.

Funny, the tone controls are notched with "defeat" which usually achieves the same thing. Dolby just reduces treble if a tape isn't recorded with a Dolby pre-emphasis curve. Tapes recorded with the correct curve will sound very trebly if the Dolby isn't applied. Some tapes (if I recall correctly) had tabs that, if defeated, would auto-actuate a Dolby filter, similar to the tabs that you snapped out to prevent recording over whatever was on the tape.

Not Dolby, extra tabs were for metal pre-emphasis curves.

Oh wow I never even looked closely at the differing tabs. Not even when putting wee strands of sellotape over the top of them to dub over shit Mystery to me. Each alternate setting sounds way different depending on cd/lp/tape. "Direct" is louder, sharper, but on tape as I just found out, way more shrill than "tone" setting

Do you use the tone controls? Bass and treble? I never fuck with them. Reference levels. I did a little research and the Direct setting is just a tone control bypass, so it's possible that the tone control circuitry is a little worn out or something, affecting the signal even when both are set to bypass. Just a guess, mind you. If you give them a prolonged twiddle while the amp is running, listen for scratching noises.

Yeah right from when I got the amp, one or the other setting would cut out in a speaker channel when switching between Direct or Tone but now it seems fine. Even bought some DeOxit thinking I was going to have to pull the bastad apart

If they aren't bypassing properly when centered, you'll be getting some tone adjustments no matter then setting.

ffs This is very impressive, but it looks like some sort of punishment: "Sit by yourself and face the wall" It'sd be nice to have a three-seater, and a French door into the garden where that wall is, with a motorised projection screen that lowers to watch movies with that meaty system.

Whenever I see a setup like that, I can't help wondering if the number of drivers muddles the sound at all. That said, I've had a minor dream of building a line array using cheap speakers to see how it sounds. I've heard that if you build them tall enough, the overall displacement means you get a fair amount of bass even with tiny drivers.
