I cannot believe FB ads work but they do. I spent 1.5 years of precious life working at an ad agency that really mastered getting people to buy crap. It was an interesting strategy and definitely right place right time. You hit your return on ad spend, so call it 3:1 -- if you do that, good, then boost those numbers. Only this place was very smart to pick shit like $100 gift items, maybe something you can engrave, and then blitz the fuck out of females in relationships -- if you spend $2,000 on an average day, $4,000 on Black Friday is a DISASTER. Should be like $100,000. You make like 1/2 your year during November/December.
Terrible job, terrible people, terrible place to work, utterly cynical and demoralizing, they'd always start sales on Saturday mornings making sure my entire weekend was fucked and then offer Monday work from home as compensation.
But smart guy. I gotta admit if I figured out how to make $100k selling weird watches on FB in my basement I would just masturbate and think I was really cool -- parlaying that into something that resembled a company and then selling that company -- well played.

All I know is that the dumbfuck lefties that are still stuck there are basically doomed to defending a kakistocracy that hates them and is actively fomenting genocidal sentiment towards them. I note this cunt of an author didn't mention the Bell Pottinger scandal, or the phenomenal death rates of farmers or the actual crime rates. My parents certainly didn't "imagine" what happened to them. Or my cousins. Or the growing list of people I know who've been murdered.
I don't recall anyone I know who wasn't genuinely ancient liking apartheid, but certainly the prospect of native rule wasn't very appealing either based on every other country on the continent being a dilapidated, corrupt shithole and knowing what a bunch of thick, violent dumbfucks the ANC were.

I remember reading Nightfall, and that it had a little intro that said that it was written with the precise, alien details of the civilisation glossed so as to be more readable. But I don't remember anything else about it.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is quite a classic, sort of the polar opposite of Banks' Culture series.
