I bought the box set (Blu-ray) for a nice price. Man, '80s TV feels like it's made by a different species of human. The cuts between stock/archive footage and footage shot for the show are a bit too obvious in HD, but there's some beautiful desert footage of that gorgeous chopper scudding along at low altitude during golden hour. Presumably the chopper shots are all second unit, and they have way more flair than the first unit, which is mostly just flatly-lit '80s TV stuff. Making a show about a helicopter blowing stuff up was always going to be a nightmare from a cost perspective, so they did as much as they could filming scenes that could be used interchangeably depending on the plot. There are still a few scenes where the helicopter is being flown with the episode's actors in the same shot, and that usually looks amazing. The obviousness of Hawke's cabin being a set in amongst the more organic helicopter glamour shots is pretty funny.
Still in the first season, so looking forward to seeing the show settle into what I remember, which was Airwolf being used as a vigilante weapon in the same pattern every week.
