I got this on Blu-ray. It's pretty terrible. Some part of me keeps hoping that these old '80s shows will have a whiff of the look and feel they inspired in those vaporwave mix videos with all the Battlezone graphics and cool synths, but mostly they're just flatly lit, slow and cheap, with scripts aimed at morons. Hasselhoff is such a self-parodying lunk in this that I'm almost positive that he and the writers are trying to subvert him as camp.

Whole exercise seemed like a thinly veiled excuse for The Hoff to cue up as many spunky extras as humanly possible to root backstage after shooting.

I've gone from "what was I thinking?" about Knight Rider to subtly admiring its tongue-in-cheek, campy style and the general craft surrounding making 26 unserialised episodes a year with actual car stunts. At first it felt offensively lowbrow, but once it finds its groove it's got that one-show-for-kids-and-another-for-adults thing going on. The chemistry between the main cast really takes off as the show gets on and Edward Mulhare's dry peevishness with Hasselhoff and KITT is delightful. William Daniels really wrings out every line as KITT for a laugh, and I keep wondering how often the studio had to pause for laughter as he minced his way through the dialogue.
It's a bit like watching very skilled children's entertainers where the show itself is inconsequential but the little betrayals of their true selves as they handle their idiot charges become hilarious.
