Family Business (1989)

Matthew Broderick was involved in a fatal car crash in Northern Ireland on August 5, 1987. He was driving a rented BMW 316 on the Tempo Road outside Tempo when he crossed into the wrong lane and collided head-on with a Volvo. The driver, Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, were both killed instantly. Broderick and his then-girlfriend, Jennifer Grey, who was in the passenger seat, were both seriously injured.
Broderick was initially charged with causing death by dangerous driving, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. However, he was ultimately convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving and fined £100 (approximately US$175). The victims' family expressed their disappointment with the verdict, calling it "a travesty of justice."
