Basically trash, but I was Immediately sold when Rutger Hauer appears in a white three-piece suit and drives off in a black 280SX. Kind of wild seeing such a pristine slice of 1980s Holland, like another planet. It's easy to think of Holland as the place of red light districts and pot and mushroom cafes, but it's an interesting reminder how conservative it was (and apparently largely still is) outside the cities. Verhoeven's pervy raunch is in full flight here, but without his satiric eye for American excess: the excess here is all just his own invention. The sheer volume of outright sexual harassment and generally vile mischief here is outrageous. Did people ever actually behave like this?
Very nice transfer on the BFI Blu-ray, colour seems subdued until some genuine saturation creeps into shot and you see how well-judged it is.
