Made by the Paddington 2 guy, this isn't lightning in a bottle like that was, but it's got a lot going for it regardless. The major flaw here is deeply sanitising the character of Wonka from the cheerfully misanthropic trickster of Wilder's portrayal. Chalamet cannot be faulted for his performance here but it's all just a bit bland, really. I liked the original message where bad kids get what's coming to them, but this is just today's standard kids' film message of follow your dreams and be sure to put on a show.
