I first saw this in my 20s and just wasn't very impressed with it given the hype surrounding it, although I did like the film. Just rewatched it with the missus (who hadn't seen it and thought Buttercup was a twit) and I appreciate it for what it is, a fluffy little comedy that anyone can appreciate.
I think the part that flummoxed me the first time was the corniness of the production values. In my mind it was placed on a level with the kids' fantasy classics of the era like The NeverEnding Story, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal and so on, but it looked like an afternoon TV special compared to those visual marvels. I think if someone had expressed that to me, I'd have warmed to it more. As it is, aside from the visual novelty of Andre the Giant, it might as well be a radio play based on the dialogue. It's fun, but overrated.

I saw this in my 20s too and yeah I thought it was overrated also. I think it does something for women that eludes me a bit. Kind of how Taylor Swift's popularity is also befuddling to me. I'm talking in generalities here of course as a lot of women probably agree with me.
