I didn't have much idea as to the subject matter here before going in, but Mamoru Oshii and planes were enough to get me interested. This is a hard film to recommend to most people because of its deliberately glacial pacing and the deliberately robotic nature of the characters. But if you liked Never Let Me Go, Blade Runner or Ex_Machina in terms of subject matter, then this might appeal. It's very thoughtful sci-fi rather than any sort of action anime, so if you're expecting that it's probably best to stay away. The production design is subtly ravishing, with one of the most original retro-futures I've ever seen. Sort of a sleek, minimalist take on dieselpunk, with really beautiful animation.
