I recalled not hating this as a teen when I saw it and thinking that despite its flaws, it actually looked great. Recently I listened to some overweight consoomer sort saying it was underappreciated so I decided to re-watch it.
Firstly, if you can forgive Dredd removing his helmet (you shouldn't) then in terms of production this is one of the most comprehensively realised live-action comic adaptations ever made. Even the score is pretty good martial stuff.
Secondly, no, it's still shit. Fundamentally misses the mark of the original work's played-straight satire and its social commentary and just thinks you can take Dredd completely seriously as a dystopian sci-fi actioner, but its action isn't really good enough for it to coast. Then, somehow realising it's missed the mark, adds Rob Schneider as a comic-relief everyman to alleviate any dramatic tension that might manifest. Rob Schneider isn't even bad, he's just the wrong guy in the wrong movie.
What a shame.
