This is a genuinely bizarre film in that I have no real idea what was being attempted. The execution is kind of perfect, the performances are perfectly good, even the story beats are in the right place, but the premise is innately silly. It almost feels like a dare: Can you make a noir film about a gritty, realistic Santa facing off against a hitman sent by a psychopathic child? Turns out you absolutely can. There are a few movies that have one of those parody trailer premises stretched to feature-length but unlike every other one of those, this is played dead serious. It functions almost like a nose thumbed at all those grim crime series with good casts, as if to say the style and tone are easy to achieve no matter what it's about. Actually kind of fascinating.
