My girlfriend brought this for us to watch together, and kept saying she didn't know if I'd like it and that it was very sad. I did like it, quite a lot in fact, and it is certainly a bittersweet sort of story but it's not sad and my experience was a bit ruined expecting some of the characters I liked so much to have something terrible happen to them. Watch it as a low-key outsider-in-suburbia adventure and it's just very entertaining.
I liked the way it has multiple sympathetic characters in conflict, and that it steelmans its lead until it doesn't and you realise you've been swept up in his ideals and fantasy. He seems to have created something genuinely amazing and admirable but it's too heavily dependent on his and his kids' 140+ IQs and he has no actual future planned for them. I really liked how un-sanitised it was in terms of, despite his obvious political leanings, accepting hunting and martial prowess as crucial to survival. There's a surprising amount of dark subtext in the film but, aside from some heavy emotional moments that form the crux of the story, it's a really enjoyable ride.
