Back when I could have been chatting with people who liked them, I didn't pay any attention to Type O Negative, and now they're a band I kind of unreasonably adore. I'll never see them live now.

Will have a think aboot this but first thought is the entire sludge metal genre. I didnt really delve into it until a few years ago In my youth I'd always be cueing past the fastish tracks by UNSANE etc to get to the sludge numbers . Constantly cueing up the one loonnnng track on the Melvins "Lysol" album. Never dawned on my walnut brain there might be a whole sub-genre of shit like this

I’m sure it has something to do with Zoomers’ infatuation with all things 90s rubbing off on you. I have noticed a lot of renewed interest in nu metal and shoegaze for example (and Type O Negative loosely fits into that). I attribute this to young kids discovering old bands and hyping them on TikTok or making reaction videos, which feeds right into the Gen X nostalgia machine. Gen X would much rather kids listen to THEIR music, than anything current, so you start seeing these old bands elevated to iconic status, and it does make you want to re-evaluate them. just an observation. No, I've been listening to Type O Negative since the late '00s after picking up a CD from the bargain bin, but back in the '90s when I was hanging out with the local goth scene it would have been nice to have more in common with them, plus some drunken memories of dancing under the strobe to their music before I got old.

also prolly my current fave band ELECTRIC WIZARD, who these days usurp even the mighty Fall for me. Didnt even know about them til about 10 years ago, when I got the Dopethrone CD. I now have all 9 studio albums. 3 on stupid CD and 6 on LP I would go weak in the knees if I ever saw this bad boy ep in the wild. ffs what are Southern Lord doing, just reissue the cunt. The stuff they're issuing these days aint even doom and most of it is in their wholesale list bargain bin section after a coupla months

For what it's worth, what I like about Type O Negative is that they purposely came across as utter lunks, putting all sorts of ironic macho posturing and self-effacing gags over their albums, but they were actually mesmerisingly good songwriters with absolutely lush harmonies and production. They had that rare mix of sincerity and irony that generally only British artists like Morrissey manage to pull off.

I’ve only heard Dopethrone by Electric Wizard. obvious classic. what else do you recommend by them? I guess I'm a bit of an outlier in that i love the later stuff whereas others will swear Dopethrone and Fanatics are their high point Electric Wizard 9/10Come My Fanatics... 7/10Dopethrone 7.5/10 (sacrilege!)Let Us Prey 7/10We Live 10/10Witchcult Today 8/10Black Masses 6.5/10Time To Die 10/10Wizard Bloody Wizard 10/10

This was my intro to EW, on a Rise Above comp., and I was all like, "woah cool unknown '70s band..."
***
As far as the OP, I dunno...Recently I have been listening to tons of late '70s power pop/new wavey stuff but I was kinda around for that - just being a junior high student, I didn't have a lot of funds or knowledge to buy, say, Nerves records...speaking of which, I saw Paul Collins here in Japan last month and it was pretty groovy. He just did a set of all the old hits with a youngish (younger anyhow) backing band. His voice is a little thrashed but he played with some non-stop energy, so it was a lot of fun...I only saw some local bands back in the day with this one being the only one I saw who put out something, I think...
