An all-round lovely experience. This is amazingly dreamlike and, while more or less suitable for children, it fully embraces the erotic tension between Belle and the Beast as one of the themes of the film. I don't know for sure, but it feels like it may have been a fairly low-budget production given the year of production, the tiny cast and the mix of location shots and fairly abstract soundstages, but this doesn't matter at all and the level of visual ingenuity is really impressive. It feels a lot like a series of classical and surrealist paintings and etchings brought to life (Cocteau was a surrealist). It's easy to see its obvious visual influence on a lot of fantastical cinema - I was specifically struck by its obvious influence on Labyrinth. Highly recommended.
