I rewatched this for the first time since its release. This is a pretty good stupid film with a kind of insane cast. Unlike most generic dumb macho flicks, there's nothing particularly obnoxious about it unless the fetishisation of militarised police rubs you the wrong way. It's kind of sassy about its blatant police-worship, which might make it a bit much to take or blackly amusing depending on your sense of humour. Sometimes all I want is some mindless gunplay, and this is about all this is: It's fun to be a heavily armed cop and shoot bad guys. I can't think of anything of late that has morals this simplistic. It's almost amazing.
I think I paid $1.50 for it, sealed, on eBay, one of the very first generation of Blu-rays. I recall when seeing this film, that it was one of the first with the hyper-saturated, high-shutter-speed, stroboscopic look that came to dominate cinema, so I can see why it was selected for the format. I assume also the digital master that was obviously used for colour-correction made it a formality to transfer. The early discs often force you to manually select the highest quality audio track because most people didn't have receivers that could process LPCM or lossless signals. Image quality is reasonable, although probably pretty good for early days and I remember this on a lot of shop demo TVs.
