Some gloomy communist-era romance courtesy of the Poles. Lot of interesting stuff going on, but the political meddling in art rang the most alarming contemporary bells. This is a very stylistically spartan film that relies on you following the events of the story to connect with its characters rather than just glomming onto performances. The 4:3 monochrome visuals are pretty striking. If you enjoyed The Lives of Others, this will be right up your alley.
