I hadn't watched this since more or less a year after it was released. It's too cutesy by half, but Culkin is a likeable enough child actor that it's never unbearable. It's almost shocking how young he was carrying this film on his own. The slapstick is still quite funny, but it could have been omitted and the premise of a lonely kid at Christmas wouldn't have suffered too much. Although it has the stodgy hand of Columbus directing, Hughes' shaggy humanist influence is all over it, and the big family vibe and Midwestern US charm is nice. I like it.
The weather's turned a bit here now and I've been in less-than-perfect health, and I got the (nicely!) remastered Blu-ray and this is one of those Christmas movies that has that intensely warm and sparkly look that makes you feel kind of cosy just for watching it.
