I can't think of any movie like this made recently. It's basically documentary footage with a narrative inserted. But, if you like racing or the sheer aesthetic of racing, this is outright pornography. I feel as though a game could be made of creating playlists for this film. If you are relatively indifferent to the subject matter, there's not much here for you, though.

Japan seems to currently have a massive hard-on for anything Steve Mcqueen. Movie channels going berko. Discussion panels set-up in mancave shrines replete with ALL the fucken memorabilia (think the toy collector guy in Toy Story selling Woody to some Japanese collector. It ALL ends up in Japan)
Plus huge demand on discogs for lp/7" soundtracks. Can't see the big deal myself. Seems like every 2nd film he made was another escape film identical to the last one
