You'd have to have a heart of fucken stone not to be impressed by this. I think it's the musical score that does it. Soaring strings etc.
Great how they made all the adults in the film baddies.
Best part was the fucking rad BMX's. $600 Redline's and Kuwahara's. $600 was a fucktonne of money in 1982. Took me back to my childhood and the freedom to roam the neighbourhood with fellow gromits.
Be funny if they tried to make a sequel now. "ET 2". Poor little ET comes back to earth but the kids uggo-shame him on insta-g and the wrinkly little cripple ends up killing himself. LOL.
The kids are all too fucken fat to ride their bicycles and the helicopter parents won't let them outside anyway. Besides which, the kids have no interest in outside anyway cos they're addicted to their screens and instatwatter. "An alien? LOL. Hashtag my DM's bish" (sorry, just a stab, I dont know how kids with smartphones actually talk)

I haven’t seen this one since it first came out on VHS. It seemed like a big deal at the time, but maybe now not so much. Overshadowed by Star Wars maybe. It is a shame about the over parenting these days, but I seem to remember some helicopter parenting in my youth. Do kids even try to run away from home anymore?

Do kids even try to run away from home anymore? I think they just stay at home in their rooms so mummy can pay their smartphone bill, at least until the twitter bullying takes enough of an effect and then they just kill themselves.

They usually record themselves committing suicide and then post it to Snapchat to get likes from all their friends. Don’t ask me how, I don’t “understand” “technology.”

They actually wrote a book as a sequel, titled "E.T.: The Book of the Green Planet". It's been over 35 years since I read it, but it had something to do with E.T. wanting to return to see Elliott, so he has to escape from his planet with the help of some other alien species. Found it: E.T. book on Amazon

One of the all-time greats. Spielberg's ability to put you in the kids' world without being condescending is pretty unmatched, I reckon.

I saw this today in IMAX. You're so right about the score, it's the real star of the movie. I wonder how Speilberg tapped into the BMX thing, when you're the age of these kids you feel like you can solve any problem with your friends on BMX bikes. E.T. is a perfect movie IMO. I love Peter Coyote in this, his character just added another layer of magic to the whole story.

Rewatched it for the first time in something like a decade and I can't believe how good it is. In some ways it feels more informed by the realist/art films of the '70s, despite flying bikes and the Williams score. There are significant plot and character threads that run through the movie with no exposition at all. Dialogue feels like it's happening incidentally rather than the focus of the camera, much like Scott's canteen scene in Alien. The performances are so good that it's amazing how no-one really came out of this a bigger star than Drew Barrymore. The lighting, a strong point of this era, is beautiful. Very naturalistic with strong shadows and highlights. What a film.
