I forgot I watched this a couple of weeks ago. It was good, not as great as the reviews but definitely worth a binge.
It doesn't really get into the chess but it was effective nonetheless because it made me want to play chess again (I played for a couple of months in my 20s), so I've been playing chess for about the last week and a half. I thought I was getting pretty good (just remembering how the pieces move) and I even won a few games but then I went up to the intermediate level and was swiftly put back in my place with some very calculated manoeuvres that went right over my head. Back down to beginners level for me.
Not sure how this series would fare with someone really into chess, it's more about the girl and the pressures she faces. Anna Taylor-Joy is wonderful, as always. The games are fun to watch but again, not really watching the games, just the actors, and I think maybe getting into the moves would have made it better; but then again maybe it wouldn't have because the chess-knowledgeable viewer may have guffawed.
7.5/10
Read a review of this that was mortifying, just went on and on about Taylor-Joy's eyes, see if I can find it.

Well, it was only a paragraph, but still I find it weird. Her eyes aren't that big and it creeps me out a little: "And then there are Taylor-Joy’s eyes. Her eyes are enormous, infinite vessels of expression. They are larger than planets, larger than galaxies, so large that she makes traditional animated Disney princesses look as if they’re squinting. If you could somehow take Emma Stone’s eyes and supersize them, you would still wind up with a pair of peepers only one-third the size of Anya Taylor-Joy’s eyes, at best. They are one of her greatest assets as an actor. Beth’s opponents generally lose to her because she’s so naturally skilled at chess. But they, and pretty much anyone else she comes in contact with, may also be disconcerted by the force of the gaze that emanates from those colossal optic orbs." www.vulture.com/article/the-queens-gambit-netflix-review-anya-taylor-joy.html

I have no idea how little kids have the wherewithall to Do The Acting. If I was 10-years old and biffed onto a film set I would just stand there like a mollified zombie and stare right at the camera and crew until they told me to please just bugger off home you useless little turd.
Child actors must be total psychos. "Oh, I have to stand here and pretend to be a liar and pretend I'm not me and that today I'm someone else and I have to walk around this room full of strangers telling lies? SURE, I CAN DO THAT"

This didn’t do much for me, though I liked the costumes and the main character, but it did make me wanna play more chess.

Chalk in the 1950s was REALLY hard to get out of erasers. Perfectly understandable it would take a kid three hours a day to clean them.

I just polished this off and liked it a lot. Kind of made me want to play chess but then I remembered I could never beat my father and just said fuck that. The acting was good and I liked the plot. The pacing was a little slow though but it helps to prepare you for the big moments. I thoroughly recommend this one.
