I tested negative for covid, so I guess I just have AIDS and/or a mild flu. That's kind of amazing that I didn't get covid during a pandemic and I'm so relieved. The horrors I've been reading about covid and long term breathing problems and hair loss are crazy.

I used to see both bands on the regs in late-80s LA. I even had a big goofy crush on the rhythm guitarist of the Creamers and then see her at the record shop on a "date" with the singer of the Lazy Cowgirls! ouchymcgouchy
And maybe it was early Dec, and I bought this record and listened to this song endlessly whilst drinking cheap jug wine until passing out on my dirty, roach-soiled carpet...

First time ever in Japan I have managed to negotiate my way through the choppy waters of Xmas/NY without being privy to 1 SINGLE SECOND of Japanese TV. I should get the Nobel Prize for Technology or some shit for this. Incredible effort by me. I could well be the first ever gaijin who has accomplished such a monumental feat.
Camp Leader was keener on Netflix and Minime wasnt here to commandeer the remote.
Fuck me, I did it.
I fucking did it.
Not ONE fucking second. It's like finishing the running with the bulls in Pamplona with nary a bead of sweat on the brow. Maybe I should write a book. Like Alex Kerr.

I always felt bad not watching Japanese tv. I'd put it on because... I lived there and wanted to get better at the language but it just SUCKED so aggressively I gave up. Of all things, I recall New Year's they run a bunch of clips of music through the ages, right? So you finally get some GS and Juicy Fruits on tv -- like the only time of year it didn't suck! Not saying I'd be up for it if I still lived there, just remember it being one of the least painful times of year of Japanese TV.
Last year I was the Grinch. No Thanksgiving. No Christmas. No revisited plans. No variations. No additional invitations. No potential configurations. It was really exhausting. Once we got through Thanksgiving the whole process started over. Well, maybe you could come by? Maybe so and so would like if you invited them? What if we invited everyone to our place? Just put me in a position of repeating variations on "No."
This year I was like okay, fuck it. First of all I can't be the heavy again. 2nd we're all vaccinated and boosted and feel good and tested negative before gathering. Isn't that the point? Looks like we "got away with it." I celebrated Christmas and lived to tell about it.
No TV though.

I was super lucky in that my first NY in Japan, I was invited by a friend of a local CIR (the other part of the JET program) to go to her family's house in Nara and spend it there with various other Shimane friends and her relatives. I had a super blast and even though it was extremely typical, we went to Daibutsu around midnight and crowded but not crazy except inside a bit, all the toshikoba, mochi etc. My friend Midori's mom was a Kansai Superobasan: Endlessly preparing o-sechi and other snacks, while carrying on loud conversations with whomever was in the kitchen at the time, but the best was when some young 20s Tokyo guy was visiting and she just picked on him non-stop. Dude fit the part of a お坊ちゃん ...
I ended up spending the first three or so NY at Midori's parents' house, even when neither she nor her older sister were there but they were a truly cool old couple and I honestly got along very naturally with them. The father was a journalist and maybe playwrite but would chill under the kotatsu watching all the marathon, song competition etc. I used tv to help get Japanese from the jump ~ That Tuesday nite enka program was awesome for beginner kanji and then one or two soap operas until, okay, got it enough of this crap...

Nice one, gg. I'd try to watch it because yes, they tend to blast a lot of kanji on a lot of programming but usually the programming was so shit I couldn't hack it. Didn't know which one to watch or maybe that enka show wasn't on when I was there.
Man that would have killed me if I were all primed to JET myself off to Japan and then not only can I not go but I have to come up with an alternate plan for the next year.
Poor fuckers.

Yep there's now a whole generation of early 20's who have missed out on traipsing around Europe backpacking or going to see bands every night in the US etc. If I was 22 and had saved my $$ for the big 2 year overseas trip of fuckaboutery and then this wuhan gtfuckoffery hit I would be LIVID. Their 20's ain't coming back. I wonder if the working holiday visa will get extended from 30 years of age max to 40. |
