This thing is a colossal WFT. Jerry Lewis AS Jerry Lewis is the straight man who gets kidnapped by wannabe comedian Robert de Niro? WFTTTT.
Ended up changing channel 20 times yet still coming back to it mainly just to rubberneck at the mental premise of the thing.
89% on RT but in 1983 this mustve been looked at as flat-out fucking spaceman material.

Yeah, I saw it in the theater and rewatched it somewhat recently. I dunno...Marty was just getting started really and it just seemed a "quirky" comedy. I think Eating Raoul came out in 1982 and you had stuff like John Waters floating around, so it just seemed like a mainstreaming of those kind of over-the-top plots. Also, an interesting counterpoint to Taxi Driver. A "NY comedy" that is similar to his next one, After Hours ~ seen it?
This scene is notable for two reasons - Here's a hint to one:

This review is pretty damn much what I would try to write, but could never finish without a segue or twelve. I think it's probably best to be a bit stoned when watching this film. I probably should have mentioned that.

This is brilliant but hard to endure. I can't see how it's a "comedy" at all, even if it is a satire. Brutally cringe-inducing.

I think it is somewhat important in that it shows how long before "reality television" became a thing there was a film that showed how humourless, self-important people ruin everything, even satire. Jerry Lewis sort of hard an impossible part, in my opinion. Also, RD is pretty good in it. I admire his acting ability. SB is superb. She makes the film really hard to watch, as she shows how terrible television really was then, and could be now but I don't watch enough of it to be certain.I don't watch films to be entertained so much as have something to think about. This film gave me a lot to think about for a long, long time.
