The best advice I ever got was to enroll in a boarding school that has A LOT of erasers which need to be taken down into the basement and cleaned THREE TIMES A DAY.

My son actually likes chess, but since Christmas he's been too enamored with Breath of the Wild to play it as much. I envy him. Even if my parents had encouraged it, I don't think I would have had patience for chess at age eight--I still don't; my mind wanders, and he beats me regularly.

Knew all the rules at 8 but never won a match in about 10 tries so gave up immediately.
If I was to play now I would go at it like one of those instinctive high-speed genuises and lose instantly but look awesome doing it.

Developed an interest in it slightly too late and not one of my friends showed me an ounce of mercy, so stuck with Reversi/Othello instead.

This dudes braininess is kind of unfathomable I read all the matches. Love the game. Used to play a lot, but now it's all online, which I reserve for dicking around. When Carlsen plays, it is quite a good time to watch him dismantle attacks. I remember playing against a 13-year old child in Japan, who had been a huge fan of Japanese chess. I would beat him regularly without much fanfare. He was a good sport and very smart. The day he finally beat me I laughed inwardly as I realized how freaking pleased he really was, congratulated him, and told him to take the chessboard home so he could play the game all the time instead of the far less interesting Japanese/Chinese version, though I didn't say that last part out loud. He did do so and became a very good chess player. I bought another board and kept playing with that one until another young girl, probably 11 or 12 years old, kicked my ass before an "English" lesson so I gave her the chess set. And so it goes. Love the game. Love to see people get good enough to kick my ass when I am not paying full attention. Everybody in my family plays. Some were local champions. I never did that tournament stuff. No patience for all the freaking rules. I played in coffee shops, at parks, and so on for cash money. Used to play some guy from Brazil at the ward office's Japanese lessons, which were basically chess games and cash money for me, plus my chance to catch up with people who were grinding it out in the dirty jobs of meatpacking and other extremely dangerous work. also known as being a housewife to a Japanese husband.

It takes a lot to do it right. As the game progresses you really have to follow each decision tree and branch thereof to its conclusion to make the next appropriate 1 move, and then of course I'm playing online so by the time 2-3 days go by and I revisit it's kind of starting from scratch.
I beat most of my friends til they got sick of playing with me but also, I hate to say this, but I concluded it's not worth the time/effort to win.
I guess this is maybe why I've seen matches where they slam a clock and you have X mins to shit or get off the pot.
