Had been meaning to delve into some of Peter Sellers work for some time - I had only seen a couple of the Pink Panther movies when I was a kid.
This movie was entrancing. Sellers low-key delivery was mesmerizing. Great performances from Richard Dysart (The Thing), Melvyn Douglas and Shirley Maclaine. A really well-written script.
But what the holy fuck was that ending? I don't want to give it away to anyone that hasn't seen it - but there doesn't seem to be a Spoiler tag on here.
Douglas won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role.
I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner - it's just one of those movies that fell into the cracks over time.

A favorite of mine. I assume the ending is a metaphor for how Chance lives an innocent, ethereal existence apart from the weighty reality the rest of us live in.

That's a great take on it. I was thinking more of a Jesus metaphor, but I like yours better.
I did like the (former) maid complaining to her friends that it was a "white man's world". Shit never changes.

I thought the end was implying that we create messianic figures by filling in their blanks with our own meanings.

Should give it a rewatch, don't think I ever saw it except original release. Definitely an influential movie and I was just thinking of it in reference to a character I cannot recall at this moment! But there is a Buddha connection too, no?
