I've wanted to see this since I found out about it as a teenager but, for whatever reason, didn't. I got the Blu-ray that was just released in Australia and it was everything I hoped it would be. Most films of this sort are made for kids, but this film really gives Matthau's drunken slob the main arc and the sheer inappropriateness of everyone's behaviour is unbelievably refreshing. This really feels like it spawned a whole genre of watered-down knockoffs. Shot right up into my list of favourite films.

the sheer inappropriateness of everyone's behaviour is unbelievably refreshing. Yeah saw this a couple of years ago, really hit home how rough and tumble us old gits childhoods were. Sports all the time or riding round the neighbourhood on our BMX's to get up to no good with the other gromits. These days what do the poor fucken kids do, get chaperoned home after school in soccer mummy's SUV then it's straight to the bedroom and the smartphone and doomscrolling online gossip that sends their adversity-deficient arses spiralling into suicidal gloom funks. Think I've got the record around here somewhere.

I love that he rewards the kids with beer in front of everyone and no-one freaks out.

Keep in mind that this film is merely the first episode in a six-film arc, which culminates in "The Bad News Bears Take It Hard in the Astrodome." I don't recommend anything past the third film.

I'm happy for this to be the only entry.

Rorschach was still only 16 when it came out. (1977)
