Rewatched this for the first time since I saw it in the cinema and gave it a perfect score. My girlfriend was absolutely enraptured by it, and I maintain it's one of the best made films I've ever seen. The story is pure sentiment and hokum, but the synchrony with the soundtrack is so incredibly executed that it functions as an extended music video on top of its incredible action. This is a movie that was clearly a passion piece, and you can think of Edgar Wright as a wacky comedy director but his comedy is so overloaded with his obsessions that when he turns his obsessiveness to drama and action, it lends a kind of affecting heft that you only get with someone like Tarantino. If you like music and you like action and you can accept that the style sometimes is the substance, this is an essentially flawless film.

Not a huge Wright fan but he definitely nailed it with this one. Agree on the Tarantino level of idiosyncrasy...

I rewatched this after The Driver as it was clearly influenced by it. Phenomenal bit of pure cinema. I occasionally like to torture myself by reading bad reviews of movies I like, and this one is mystifying to me. The way people don't get this one is incredible ("A formulaic heist movie with an intrusive soundtrack"). I can't imagine being that utterly insensitive to style.

I occasionally like to torture myself by reading bad reviews of movies I like It's a lot of cathartic fun to type out reviews of movies and absolutely put the boot in. Just go to town on the cunt. Quite liberating and something the forii could do more of. Even for films you havent seen but know will be shit. Just make it up ffs and slag that cunt seven ways to sideways |
