Last saw this on Betamax (although I did see it at the drive-in upon release) and remembered only isolated scenes. Got the Blu-ray and it looks stunning.
It's certainly not your usual "rousing Tarzan adventure" and more of a melancholic exploration of primal human nature versus "civilised" socialisation. It's not entirely successful at everything it attempts but it's attempting to have you fully engage with people in ape costumes raising a boy and Christopher Lambert making chimp sounds, so it's pretty damn forgivable. It's pretty amazing that it's not unintentionally hilarious a lot of the time.
Hugh Hudson's direction is competent if a little conventional - although the film looks fucking great thanks to Barry Lyndon cinematographer John Alcott - but it's hard not to wonder what someone with more of a flair for the bizarre could have done with it.
Worth a look!
