Nearly all my music is from CD ripped to FLAC (which I then make MP3 copies of for portable devices).
I use Exact Audio Copy, a really old version that works pretty damn well. One of the things I noticed was that a fair few CDs have their table of contents slightly off, so songs start a little late or a little early, making the occasional track begin or end with a bang. I discovered you can change the disc offset by up to 12,000 samples either way and so I've been redoing some ancient rips of albums with that problem.
I've also been renaming all the songs that appear on multiple discs so the spelling and punctuation are consistent and adding version details ( (7'' mix), (instrumental), etc) where there is a noteable difference in the song's length or mix. I tend to get collect-y on bands I like so I end up with the same track a few times if they liked it.

An example of a track with bad offset:

This whole album is beset with it. I thought it might have been a prank until I downloaded another copy of it that didn't have the errors. Adjusted offset and no all the tracks start perfectly.

Nearly all my music is from CD ripped to FLAC (which I then make MP3 copies of for portable devices). You keep the cd's? Sometimes read horror stories along the lines of "yeah I ripped the whole lot then got shot of the cd's then the cloud crashed and now all of my music is gone"*
*jargon/terminology inaccuracies could be all over this sentence.

Yep, I keep them. Quite attached, really.

This is my collection. I live in a small apartment so there's not much room for shelves, plus I never actually play the discs since I ripped them. Doesn't look like much, but using flat poly-sleeves instead of jewel cases has dropped the space requirements for my 1,367 albums by over 80%, meaning if I kept the original packaging I'd need fifteen tubs instead of the three here. I'd like a showy wall of discs like those above, but until Australia has its economic apocalypse, everything's about saving space.

Same situation for my movie collection, although I use a different sleeve type and keep the artwork flattened out in a few concertina folders.

New blank CD jewel cases are weirdly pricey now, even wholesale bulk. Last I saw they worked out at almost $1 each. FFS, you may as well just buy super cheap landfill cd's, biff away the cd and keep the case.

Everything is so overpriced now.
I buy from these guys. Quality is very good and they're not THAT cheap but it's vastly cheaper than any other solution I've found. For my movies I thought of buying a heat cutter to make flat poly-sleeves for the discs and artwork, since buying 2,000 of any of the poly-sleeve options out there would be insane and I'd rather just buy more films. I use these for movies:
They're the cheapest things available that actually protect the disc, and they're so thin you might as well be storing the discs on a spindle for all the space they take. Ugly, though, so you need a box.

I remember when taking a disc out of a jewel case felt like the future. Opening what felt the canopy of a toy spaceship, seeing the disc hovering in its little black cradle, holding the disc by the edges, giving it a flip over to check the rainbow surface for dirt, and then dropping it in the motorised drawer and hearing all the whirs as it started to play for you. Vinyl still felt special (the heft and dropping the needle are a delight), but CD felt like you were opening a wormhole into the studio, accessing the official version of the music.
Now it just feels like a way to store digitally-abused WAVs.

I am pretty sure I posted before about these vinyl sleeves I found in the mid naughts. They got harder to find but I managed to score enough to eventually store all of my CDs - and those perfect sized tubs. I even went through a period of making covers for CDRs of my Raerz and what not. Unholy Swill baby... Now I wonder if a used CD shop will buy them like this. God knows how many I have actual d/ls of and I have only ripped maybe 100 myself. Would love to pay some Samoan midget to rip them all to flacs but with minimum wage going to 1500 yen here...

Tsukebbo and The Vic, all these cd's need to be displayed properly out in the open instead of being lumped into these desultory and shameful plastic storage tubs. Just seeing their covers as you sit around or walk past will raise your spirits and electrify your stiffy and compel you to put the thing on for a listen.

Where are those tubs from? I've been looking for something exactly like that. From a DIY home center by my house in Hiroshima...over 15 years ago. It is still there and I was actually just there yesterday buying a gasket! I can check if they still sell them - doubtful in this day and age but maybe still available somewhere in Internetland...

Haha, don't worry. I've found the only way to find Japanese products to buy online is by using the barcode.

Finally got around to d/ling EAC so mega cheers for that Ladyfingers...However, is there an easier way to get the files named, such as when ripping them? I am trying out that music Brainz -Picard software but it seems a bit of a pain. TIA! Should I pony up for the service offered with EAC??

EAC will name everything based on the tags, you just need to set it up correctly.
All my stuff is named Artist - Date - Album/01 - Trackname.flac, as you can deduce from the graphic above.

Thanks...I understand the naming scheme, but I was referring to the database for looking up the CD info. The default is the GD3 DB - they give you 10 disc lookups for free and then it's 8 bucks or so for life, so seems worth it. There was a free one up to a few years ago apparently. Otherwise, it seems like a great program, so now all's I need is to live until I'm 130 so I have time to rip all my CDs...

ps I hate to brag but I have 138 cd's.

Oh, yes, it used to have a free hookup to CDDb, but that died and so there's a new workaround. I'm hyper-fastidious, so I only ever use the results as a basis for my own improvements. I'm still getting results for the occasional new album so this is being updated.
