I'm itching to talk about this with someone who has watched it all, particularly the themes of {Spoiler} determinism and the cycles as symbolic of the cyclical nature of abuse etc. I posted about it at reddit as it aired and there were some great discussions, but have always wanted to discuss it with RT posters. I'm curious as to your thoughts and interpretations, what were you expecting out of season 3 and how did season 3 meet those expectations.
Particularly interesting re season 3 is {Spoiler} that the director was intent that the show carry out its deterministic premise to the end, but the writer disagreed and wanted the loops to be broken free from. I think they found an interesting way of reconciling what seem to be opposing viewpoints.

SPOILERS
I think Dark speaks to the human condition in so many ways, and how clinging to our egos is stifling our potential to be a better species, and thus individuals (or vice-versa). We saw Helene's history - she was possibly sexually abused and had to get an abortion when she only about 12yo. We can see her life turned her into the 'monster' she became. She wasn't able to break from the cycle of abuse, and this struggle is akin to the struggle of the main characters trying to break free from the infinite loops of time they find themselves stuck in.
It's also representative of our human condition, history repeating itself in awful ways, because we don't learn anything from our past mistakes.
Who eventually breaks free from the cycle? Not Adam, he is intent on destroying the cycles. Not Eva, she is intent on perpetuating them. Adam and Eva are not just symbolic of progenitors and perpetuators of the cycles, they are renamed because they are DIFFERENT people than who they were when they were Jonas and Martha.
That's why it's Jonas and Martha who are able to end the cycles - because they have not fallen prey to their desires yet. I think Dark is saying not only that the human condition is bleak (Dark) because humans can't act unselfishly and therefore follow deterministic paths that create endless cycles of pain, but that the only hope for us, is mostly our younger generations, who haven't yet become slaves to a deterministic/selfish way of thinking.
But I'm still a little confused about Jonas and Martha - was this a deux a machina ending? I thought so originally and while I didn't really have a problem with that, I still had a lot of questions. Others have said that it's not a deux a machina ending and give good explanations why it's not.
And a lot of other stuff, that I'm not even sure I understand. I'm not sure I even have a full grasp on determinism.
Season 3 was a bit of a letdown for me because there was so much exposition, in stark contrast to s1 and s2 where showing and not telling was done so masterfully. Also, I guessed that Jonas was renamed Adam after Adam as progenitor and I thought they would all become their own ancestors (Elisabeth and Charlotte foreshadowed this) . Didn't get that exactly right, didn't figure Martha would become Eva.
Also not sure what I think about the trio, it was a little gimmicky.
Young Noah kills his father, who was Bartosz gone back in time and grown older. Helene kills her own daughter, Katharina, not even knowing it was her from the future. Adam kills Hannah. Ulrich and Helge.
It's all so awful and brilliant.
How amazing/awful is it that the woman who drowned in the lake, that they talk about in season 1/2, where Jonas and Martha kiss, ends up being Katharina. So dark.

Up to S2 e2 now but signs of flagging it. Still following but really only barely and not enough to, say, push pause when the headstones come up of dead people and I have to think who they are and which time zone we7re in right now FFs. Still, it was fairly rad when yellow raincoat lad {Spoiler}popped in to see his mum in the past of her future (?) to tell her the son she knew is stuck in the future but he just came from the future to visit her for a cup of tea. Not too much for her to take on board there... The language is a bit Westworldy easter-eggy circumcuitious; "follow the self to the centre and find the centre within you which was the destiny of your past to be fulfilled in the present".Don't make me work too hard to follow this bullshit u U-boaty cuntz. It's a time travel fantasy ffs.

Yeah but the 3rd and 4th time you watch, it's so much clearer and you can concentrate on the other questions you have. I don't think many people will ever fully understand it but get to re-watching, buckos.

I copied and pasted from my posts at reddit and tried to make it coherent but there's a lot more to get into, and I can't do it without other people's thoughts and insights. I mean, I could, but what a lot of people can post in a few days would take me two months or so. So shamon.

I was thinking that a cabinet of infinite Marthas would be an awesome thing but then each one coming out of there was scarier than the last. That wig does not hold up well against the ravages of time.

The only other show I've watched this much, that I can remember, is Twin Peaks.

Damn you bingey bastads go fast on these telly things. Just take your time you gourmandising cunts, its the journey not the destination, etc etc. MORANS Up to S2 e3 now. The editing is a wee bit frustrating. Just when something interesting starts panning out they'll switch to some other narrative 33 years away thats less alluring. FFS just stick with where the action is wankers. Oh well at least theyre starting to show the dicking around with the {Spoiler}time travel box
Noah the hopelessly sketchy and villainous nazi paedo priest randomly loitering about around the cave at random years is a bit of a daft wft

WFTFFS.
There I was thinking she is the absolute female tip of the spear of breedable subjects. The amazonian alpha of birth hatcheries. It would surely be forever springtime in her perenially-seeded black forest.
And yet shes a lezzer
Terrible casting u kraut kuntz

S2 e4, ok clever dicks, smart-arse time traveling {Spoiler} Noah is in 1921, with his younger self, 32 years before the tunnel is built. Young Noah knows he has to wait 32 years before he can do the back to the future boogaloo. WhereFT does that leave older Noah in 1921. No tunnel means no tunnel. HowFT did older Noah get back to the future? If ONE of you geniuius cuntz replies with some "time is but a construct that is everywhere and timeless, as present in the past as it will be in the future" twaddle I'm calling the fucken cops. THE TIME COPS.

I'm back to rewatching this and doing some reading and man, the references in this show are so good. One flew right over my head even after all my re-watches. 'Ghosts' by Antonia Barber, which was one of my favourite books when I was a kid. The episode it's in is even titled "Ghosts" for pete's sake (s2 e3).

"What once was, now is, and then shall be, for time is timeless, and forever entwined in each of us, a knot in the universe that ravels and unravels, like the tide of the sea eddying against the hull of each our voyaging vessels, we pass as ships in the night, so near yet so far, the past as distant as the future, and the future as near as the present, all linear time constructs as distinct as the day before yesterday will be tomorrow..."

S2 E6 tied a lot together, iGhomo. Was quite touching in E7 when {Spoiler}old Jonas's teen squeeze popped in the fam home and found him. Oops. Then blabbermouth mum barrels in and barrages the poor girls brain with a "you are this drongos aunt, I'm his granny, he's my nephew and why the FUCK haven't any of us taken any time out from our racey 1933 time travel shenanigans to kill Adolf Hitler ffs"
