My compares-with bands are completely off the cuff and not sit down and give serious attention to whatever noise some daddy-ohs be blasting to produce a publishable review. I hadn't listened to the younger Brotzmann in a while and I think that live video highlights his unique guitar style or whatever and that is of course the focus of the band really while the Swans are a lot more ponderous and the focus is on Gira's angst(?). I honestly have never gotten that much into their early stuff even though Forced Exposure forced Gira's "crazed ideations" or whatever on the readers. Really dig this current later period Swans, and was even rocking the new one the other day. tldr: I don't know what the fuck I am talking about but I do.
You can happily listen to the whole of The Seer or To Be Kind, I'm sure.
Never really got "angst" from Gira as much as I got someone trying to convey the intensity of the human experience/reality in general.

No doubt, I am giving him underserved short shrift. Although angst is a pretty good word: How unfocused those early writings and lyrics were, I dunno, but re-evaluating any underground cultural detritus from the 1980s is beyond dicey dicey and outright problematic nowadays. I do understand that he was working through actual abuse and trauma. "Problematic" yo! I got your problem right herrrre baybeeee... I didn't even mention mid-period Swans, because that seems like that also needs more checking out. A friend who worked at Caroline sent me Children of God on vinyl either but, well that was a long time ago. I do certainly regret missing out on the SY/Swans shows at the loading docks in downtown LA. phuu-phuuu what was I thinking. That can be said about a lot of my youth. "What were ya wasting time studying for dipshit?" phuu and phuuuuu Remember how Henry Rollins even endeared himself to that LES contingent via Lydia Lunch, who at some point even called out his tedious journals, but he has gone down a much much less interesting route than Gira or Lydia Lunch (who I really do admire greatly) since the days of R Kern and the cinema of transgression. Sorry, thought I would pre-game Aus v UK in the women's WC tomorrow tonight and have gotten a bit switched on.....Anyhow, I am pretty sure I saw Angst at my uni campus. Pretty blah huh? Four records on SST Also saw Soul Asylum and Fishbone at uni. My friend mistakenly yelled out a mashup of two SA song titles and they tried to play it. Hilarity ensued. Then they dated super models or sumthin. This was one of the songs - if you can name the other half of the mashup I will honestly kiss you. And of course I saw The Rollins Band at the indoor bar area at my uni. Actually, I saw him do spoken word the year or two before. But this was short hair buff Henry rnr machine. This boogie-woogie rawk band opened - loved them. This was the Sunday morning hangover blues song....In those verboten cultural times... "It only takes one minute to decide if you are gonna be a part of the problem or a part of the solution!"

Heyyy I've got that Urinals 7"!
Yeah, the $4 bootleg, not the $400 original. ffs
I go back and forth on Rollins depending on what he's talking about (and he's always talking) but today I'm thinking "giant doofus". I saw Rollins Band in Tokyo around 1994, him and his silly little 5" 8 shirtless camera flex statue pose that he does for the whole show, and he was so in love with himself and his precious and unique angst it was almost comical.
As I've said before though, what a fantastic grift. A true American capitalist success story. Just talking about himself for hours on end and getting paid million$$ for it. Brilliant.
It's all he does.
Just talks about himself.
I dont give a fuck about him yet somehow know everything about him because as soon as you interact with any of his spoken or printed mediii he will immediately start retelling his entire life history. All the self reference and self reverence becomes enough self reverberence to circumnavigate a career premised almost solely on talking about yourself? Master stroke!

Anyhow, I am pretty sure I saw Angst at my uni campus. Pretty blah huh? Four records on SST Wow, not what I was expecting, really rooting this. Always just skipped right past this band when shopping from the SST catalog for my store. "Angst? Fuck knows what that is. Prolly a dud. And it's the same price as more copies of Damaged and New Day Rising? Sorry "Angst"..... Can see why they got 4 lp's on SST. Although guess at the time that sound wouldve paled compared to the incendiary stuff coming out from Black Flag and Husker Du.

Yah, I guess they weren't bad - "folk rock" right? Dylan never really clicked with me but once I heard these guys and gals, I could say folk, they rock too sure...
Early Sub Pop darlings cast off to Europe where bands are treated as huemans or so I hear...
Speaking of Sub Pop, I think Mudhoney re-released their first single...
Sidebar: This song was written two years before I was born. Wha'ppen? As my bud arguemented the other day, well the US is still here and thriving isn't it?
extra super pointless bonus...tbc due to technical issues

Have barely checked out Alvarius B but that's an awesome song...I really like the Sun City Girls when I can give them the full attention they need. Alvarius B obviously requires the same as in not for accompanying reading, working... Probably why I have listened to Sir Richard Bishop the most. Have expressed my love for Fahey here previously. I listen to an improv comedy podcast that sometimes has on musicians with mostly singer/songwriter modern folkies. I've been impressed with a number of them but haven't followed up on them really... Edgy '80s folk *** Speaking of which... Vote yes or no for my take on this www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/15/the-evolution-of-steve-albini-if-the-dumbest-person-is-on-your-side-youre-on-the-wrong-side"After pulling up in a well-used Ford hybrid, he greeted me wearing two face masks, one white and one black. (The week we met, two bands he was scheduled to work with had to cancel their sessions because a member tested positive for Covid.)"

Thank god Kim Deal approves, but hey he was right that the Pixies were a put together band to grab "indie rock" rings...And those two past "horrors"? Seem pretty on the money, especially given GQ's hetero-cis privileged POV, they need to go away no? (I imagine the mag has embraced gay males since they might statistically purchase more grooming products and fashionable clothes)
Note the article doesn't mention his glowing praise for Peter Sotos and Pure...alas...I will skip my larger thoughts on the awokening process...
See? He's just a regular all-american dude. Anyhow...
*** Speaking of Helmet...
Oh, they have FIVE post-Betty albums...huh...checking out Seeing Eye Dog from 2010...some interesting stuff but those first few albums are probably plenty. Didn't know he was in Band of Susans for a while. Pretty sure I saw them at Rhino Records around that time but maybe I saw UT...those second-tier NY noize bands run together a bit although Band of Susans are fairly straight-ahead rock compared to their scene brethren and sisthren.

Man that thing needs a vinyl reissue. Released by Amrep as a 2x10" then I think a ltd 12" LP pressing later and thats it. Prices start at $100 online now 1994. 1994 is 30 years ago now ffs

Yah Betty is still great, put it on after that later one. They had artistic freedom and good royalties at Interscope but ended up with their records being disappeared and fighting over royalties...Dude seems like a good thoughtful dude so Free Betty! *** I really liked Dustdevils who were maybe even third-tier LeS noize probably due to their records coming out on a tiny UK label. The main dude had a blog in the naughts where he shared d/ls of full albums, not so much rarities as just stuff he liked with a weekly or so Fall Thursday Hah! Always thought Pavement were a weak Fall ripoff!! Stuff he posted included Warning: Somewhere between Soul Asylum and "emo" (?) works weirdly for me *** The Black Snakes, Richard Kern's band, put out a record on a Swedish label (Radium, same as Union Carbide) that always eluded me until I traded something a vinyl rip CDR with some dude up Scandi way It wasn't so much for Richard Kern, I just liked the songs off this interesting comp that the infamous Mykel Board put out www.discogs.com/master/149652-Various-The-End-Of-Music-As-We-Know-ItDowner ballad for the pillow...

Almost pulled the trigger on a cheap copy of that Flying Saucer Attack LP the other day. Have the one they did with Roy Montgomery but I really have to be in the right mood for it Wow that first "Dustdevils" clip is right in my wheelhouse. Plenty of cheap copies on the discogs... www.discogs.com/sell/list?master_id=254505&ev=mb&sort=price%2Casc

seen a heap of these indie rock for idiots vids pop up on y-tube recommends lately. is this all we get nowadays instead of the well funded heavily researched, earnest honour roll of taste maker talking heads rockumentaries? now its just some blokes opinions that seem to be based solely on reading a bands wiki page, maybe a pitchfork review or two and viewing some youtube clips. i don't understand who the target demographic is that laps up these things? but hey, they have seem to get a shit ton of hits and no doubt suck-cess-fully monetised the shit out of it. so, good on 'em i guess.

It just popped up in my YT front page from searching for 'live helmet 2023' a few days ago...Four or five years ago a friend told me his 16 year old went straight to YT to look anything up. Now it is probably Tik Tok(?) But definitely when the words "monetized video" became common parlance there were a few massive successes and a shit-ton of pale to deathly white imitators. These 10 minute music guides are definitely one genre, but it must pale to those first impressions videos ("Opera singer hearing Iron Maiden for the first time!!") or unboxing vids. I can't even bear to look up how many millions that one kid and his family made for opening up shiny new toys! So much to "unbox" in all this electronic economy of digital dollars, but this is a music thread... I will say though that the Helmet video scratched an itch because I really did not know (or recall) what happened to the band and all their later output. Something AI can probably do soon enough - assemble a video like that for you in say, less than a minute.

I had a well-worn copy of Trouser Press in '79 or '80 that had The Monochrome Set, Soft Machine, and The Soft Boys and those names always stuck in my mind even though it would take me decades to hear them...The first two, meh, but I can't believe how long it took me to hear "I wanna destroy you" - like only three-four years ago! Love it to death and have even been listening to Hitchcock solo stuff...

soft boys are under rated 'underwater moonlight' with 'i wanna destroy you' on it is a good lp
as for soft machine, weird '60s with kevin ayers were great. their later '70s jazz fusion versions are mostly very boring
