Holy crap. That is unbelievable. Pure sorcery. Awesome sauce! My first new wave/punk rock was of course recorded with something like this from a transistor radio of a show in San Diego called the Modern World. The symphonic version of Smither Jones was one of the songs on that first cassette and makes me teary-eyed to this day when I hear it...

This is pretty great. I love that noise from 1:17. It's like the greatest security blanket for my brain ever. When I turn on a cd and its not there I get suspicious. I'll turn on Dolby B for my next recording. ps if I have to redub ALL of my tapes I will be spewing. Goddamnit I am such a MORAN. Forget Mike and The Mechanix, I am Moran and the Moranivich's. Just experimented recording from cd to chrome tape with dolby B on and they fuckign tape sound has jumped from a 5/10 to an 8/10. FFS.

Generally from cd to chrome or cobalt tape with the Dolby OFF cos I always thought it muffled the brightness #facepalm

I don't mean to seem condescending, and I do get the appeal of analogue stuff, but is there a reason (besides fun) you don't just burn CDs?

My collection is all in FLAC, so I could create mixes with perfect fades/transitions, auto-normalised to go on cassette.
I have no reason to, but I could.

I'm so ripvanwinkle I dont even know what "burning" is. Dubbing to blank cd? To computer? I'm trying to get away from the clangy jarring piercing skranging digital sound not fuck with more of it.

"Burn a CD", to write data to a writeable CD-R. I do it for purposes of deejaying, so I can keep all the tracks I need on a few discs instead of lugging the originals around with me. I can't help wondering when talking to people with an aversion to shrill "digital" sound if they have just built unusually bright systems to compensate for the less trebly/bassy sound of analogue media. My system is fully digital, and not even slightly harsh. There are CDs/MP3s that sound bad because of lousy mastering, or because of early transfers that were trying to show off some aspect of digital audio's advantages at the expense of taste or neutrality. I think some early CDs still had the RIAA curve applied by accident, although that was very rare. There are purposefully pre-emphasised CDs too, but they're limited to a few classical and jazz labels and, weirdly, the first run of Black Sabbath CDs. Those rely on CD players that still have the circuitry for de-emphasis.
I know there are a few albums that have to be very compromised on vinyl, like one of the early Zeps that was mastered with massive bass and dynamic range that cause it to skip on cheaper decks, resulting in the second batch being mastered more tamely and causing that first issue to be worth a fortune on the collector's market. I think Mezzanine by Massive Attack has a lot of deep bass on the CD that isn't on the vinyl for similar reasons.
Anyway, horses for courses, but it just sounds to me like you need an EQ or filter for the flat digital sound to integrate properly into your system. I think there are little valve pre-amps that people swear by, even DACs with valve outputs.

My system is fully digital, and not even slightly harsh. Maybe cos thats what your used to. I grew up with tapes. CD's have always sounded glassy and uninviting to me

I grew up with records and tapes too! When CDs arrived, it was like a veil had been lifted. You're not alone in not liking CDs, and there's a cottage industry out there making things to return the warmth to them.
As regards harshness, I am very sensitive to shrieky audio and prefer treble that's a little rolled off. I even put tissue paper in some headphones. I'm lucky in that my current system is a home theatre with a really stonking sub, so to get the kick of loudness the overall volume doesn't have to be that high and those horrible glassy trebles aren't there but the detail still is.

Recent scabs
Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs - abandoned this band after Boces in 1993 when they dumped the mental singer and "sold out". The first song has very "nice" vocals I guess everyone lost their shit about back in the day. After about 5 songs it got dull and not weird enough Ministry - Filth Pig - another old one I was curious to rehear. man I LOVE tis thing. The hyperspeed industrial skronng is out, this is way more slowed down mid-tempo munt. Almost doom sludge Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull Earth - Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method - both deeply relaxing but absolutely fuckall happens. It's basically elevator music for miserable cunts. Windhand - Soma - this thing is hell on toast. The low end frequencies and distortion rumble are off the charts Swervedriver - Raise - not as epic as I remembered from 1991 Cop Shoot Cop - Ask Questions Later - reacquisition from my youth. doesnt hit. Primus - Suck On This - another from my youth I was curious to rehear. Funny how bands best shit is so often on their first couple of releases then after that they spend 30 years trying to replicate the thrill of it with such incredibly limited results Frank Black - Hang On To Your Ego 12" - liking this wayy more than I though I would. Neil Young - Decade 3xLP - dirt cheap 3xLP cos the jacket is trashed. FFS this might be the single most essential Neil Young release T. Rex - Bolan Boogie - cannot go wrong here. Instant good cheer Ministry - ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ -- too hyperactive industrial for me these days

What are the best albums by mercury rev? All i have is the one single you sent me many years ago.
Lately i’ve been listening a lot to that cocteau twins album with harold budd. Not sure exactly what bud’s contribution is but it all sounds nice.
Never heard of Windhand before. Sounds promising.

What are the best albums by mercury rev? Yerself Is Steam: 10/10 Boces: 8/10 Had cassette copies for years, wore em out. Have dubbed tapes now but need them LP's. Prohibitively expensive though ffs. It might have dated a bit from my heyday of 1991 but I think of Yerself as one of the Alltime Burnout LP's. Up there with a few of Neil Young's, Dinosaur Jrs and Sonic Youth's Daydream. It's a fucking crime they sold out and went all Top 40 bullshit after making those 2 albums. Goddamn fucking crime.

linkI love this cover of Wipers' "Youth of America" Greg Sage is one of the most underappreciated musicians on the planet. Wipers are the best band Portland, Oregon ever produced! I only have 5 percent hearing loss in the highest register an ear can discern so I basically have the hearing of a 15-year old. The one and only time I saw The Melvins must be when I lost that 5 percent. Fuck me fuck me fuck me. They passed out earplugs at the door. I scoffed at them and walked by. I soon returned once The Melvins were on the bloody stage. Great show. Just left my only hearing loss there at that show. I have probably said this before, but it was just too bloody loud to describe. Saw The Clash and it was almost like it was coming from inside my empty head. Still, The Melvins just overpowered me. I could feel the vibrations when I would take a break and go outside. Small earthquakes, really. I was helping a band who opened for The Offspring in 2001 or 2002. I thought it would be loud. Hah! It was like Sammy Davis Jr. in Vegas. I could even discern the guy behind the scene's voice who could hit the high notes Dexter had long since not bothered with. I don't know. I had sort of hoped that The Offspring would make my ears bleed. No such luck. I didn't really know any of their songs so having to hear them at a reasonable volume level was not what I had hoped for. I wanted a more "Sonic Youth" noise experience. Sonic Youth, well, they never let me down in the noise department. Never.

Those first 3 LP's are all perfect 10's. The day 20 years ago that a man named "The 'Ost" dubbed that boxset for me was, looking back, an epochal moment in my life. The 2006 reissues were, without a word of exaggeration, the defining contribution to American music civilisation. Who knew Gronk69fuckyes was such a man of class and taste. I have probably thrashed all 3 records to deth by now but they are still probably the LAST things I would ever sell

My ear got blocked one day so went to hospital for unblocky block and after they ran some tests they got about 4 other doctors in the room and told me I'm hearing things I "really have no need to hear" or some shit. Fucken dog frequencies or some malarkie Bizarre considering the volume I've had my headphones on for my whole life ffs

I had The Wipers Land of the Lost back in the day but it took that first-three album box set for me to really get them, and no doubt, those are all great albums...still don't play Land of the Lost tho...
Saw the Melvins open for the Headcoats and Mudhoney. My friend got quickly bored by the Melvins, so we retreated to the bar, a separate room of a fairly large venue, but could hear them just fine...

We can discern the lower frequency range just fine, plus cassettes sound way better. I have thousands of classical CD's where the dynamic range is useful, but for The Melvins? Nah, not necessary.

I should've posted this, since neither of the above bands can really get that rusty sludgy tone that Sage produces
Although it reminds me of fellow Portland freaky Godparents of punk/underground rock...

Hasselhoff Experiment band guy brought all the DEAD MOON lp's into my shop for consignment around 1999. The records looked fairly primitive and very D.I.Y but were all such a great standard of music. Reasonably priced too. Still reasonably priced now on the discogs too. The Fugazi of garage punk?
ffs had no idea about this:

Pretty good for pussy-ass kiwis... Yeah the tall guy, Andrew. Best dude. Have to bear in mind the times, late 90's, garage was out, metalcore and emo were king. He was fighting the tide Him bringing the entire Crypt catalogue into my shop on consignment actually introduced me to the Country Teasers and The Oblivians ffs. Beats the Promise Ring and Earth Crisis ffs

I like this cover better than the Melvins, the performance benefits from an additional guitar player.

I was lucky enough to see Dead Moon in a little club called, Max’s in Eugene, Oregon. It was a great show, I like their pre-show tradition where they light the candle. 54/40 or Fight was the song I remember from the performance.
