The three-point line and shot clock make basketball extremely stupid for me. It was much more fun when losing the ball could mean you didn't see it again for three minutes. Just failed track athletes and long distance shooters who cry "Foul!" at the slightest touch. So boring. Don't even watch it anymore at any level.

You were totally gung ho back in the day. I'm in the exact same boat though. Used to flop down and watch every televised reg season game for 3 hours. The whole narratives. The Warriors were my baddies. Fuck I hated them. Then it slowly dawned on me that these reg season games were an utter dawdle and these cunts were giving it about 60% and teams were just taking turns scoring. Then *blip*, SkyTV Japan lost the NBA contract to DAZN and I thought well, thats a clean break for me, I'm not signing up to that shit. Havent seen a game since. When was that, 3 years ago? 5? Couldnt even tell you who won the NBA last year and wouldnt know who the young guns are. Weird stat I read recently; back in the 90's 3-pt attempts per game were 7. Now they're 35+

Now they're 35+ I was very much into basketball, even coached. Now, the game is so boring that coaching it would be digging my own grave far too quickly for my taste. 35 plus threes a game. So boring. And the players seem to believe, J.J. Reddick for example, that they are so great. Yes, they can train all year, but watching the old-time players one thing is really clear. There were so few teams so only the best of the best ever got on the court, plus there weren't these huge television deals so many games were really physical. Lumberjack basketball. Bob Cousy averaged 5 rebounds a game as a guard. He had to win so did what it took to win, and then went home and did his other job until training camp. I cannot imagine how great the guy would have been had he been able to train 12 months of the year. Of course the players of today are good at what they do. They need not do anything else. And the league rewards people for NOT going to the basket. It's like rewriting the rules of Sumo so that nobody ever has to get into the ring and actually fight for something.

One weird thing I've noticed in the highlights of today vs my obsessive watching back in the 90's: so many of the players now have no musculature.
Even your bog standard 90's player on the end of the bench looked shredded to shit.
Was it all roids? Or are todays guys raised on xbox and fast food and it's just become the norm to have pipe cleaner arms so they dont feel the need to hit the weights? I remember pipe-cleaner armed dweebs used to wear a t-shirt underneath their bball singlet to hide their shame*.
*Larry Johnson excepted.

How dominant would he have been had he not had that terrible injury to his back? Pretty special player. In the 1990's and before you were expected to take the ball to the basket and get hammered doing it. Now, stand 24 feet away and take a three-point shot, sometimes half of FG attempts are from beyond the arc. Don't need a lot of grit to get that done, and it shows. It is a league of Craig Hodges. One was enough for me, thanks.

Ja Morant is worth watching. Ja missed this dunk, but it sums up his attitude and fearlessness.

Nuggets easily account for the showpony idiot Lakers on opening day.
Numbskull Reggie Miller talking up Anthony Davis as MVP candidate but fuck me even after all these years AD is still kind of a space cadet isnt he? That 2nd half he seemed to have no clue what he was doing. Or even what he was supposed to be doing. Really sticks out when you compare him to Jokic.

Eric Gordon has turned up for the season in horrendous shape. Think he might even have moobies. Still got dat 3 stroke though.
Hachimura has size and quick feet and looks every inch an NBA player.... yet seems to have fuckall bball IQ. If you saw him and Rec Centre Reaves walking through the airport you'd never guess the honky is a more effective player...
I thought the NBA was a 3-a-thon these days? Seen the 1st 2 Laker games this season and, apart from Suns Ring Chaser Hungus Durant, nobody has been launching them like a mental.

watching a game a day now. Great to fast forward past the ad breaks. Damn the whole thing only takes about an hour.
Warriors almost came a cropper vs the meat and spuds Kings. Chris Paul, Klay, Steph, Wiggins and Draymond. So apart from Draymond who's going to do the shitwork in the paint to compete for the rebounds so you showpony's can ponce about on the arc waiting to launch yet another 3?
Same deal at the Clippers? Westbrick, Kawhi, Paul George, Harden... who's going to do the gruntwork to snare offensive rebounds there?

Vic W. I mean what the actual fuck??? As the old song lyric went, "a man so large he barely fits circumstance"
Listed as 7"4 but yeah if Durant is actually 7ft then Vic looks about 7"11 there. Watched this whole game today: www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/nov/03/victor-wembanyama-spurs-suns-game-reportIt's almost disconcerting watching him play. He can dribble like a guard but barely needs to leave the floor to place the ball through the cylinder. 19 years old ffs. So spindly though. He looks like any awkward fall would be bone snap territory

LoLakers hammered by Orlando Magic without Markelle Fultz. A couple of german honkies too good for Lebron, Anthony Davis, et al.
Lakers bigs decided that boxing out and basic defensive rebounding arent glamourous enough. Pounded in the paint.
D'Angelo Russell ffs. The guy is insanely talented but is a wrong decision-making basketball machine. Oh look, after his guys have slogged their arses off to get the ball and get in good position he's casually launched yet another speculative 3. Clangg.
Cam Reddish seems to be caught out on d all the tiiiime. Wrong side. Again.
He doesnt seem to bring anything offensively either. How is he starting for the Lakers?

Warriors vs Cavs.
Cavs looked like spry young colts. In comparison for the Warriors, the raging against the dying of the light is at hand.
Klay and Draymond 33 Curry 35 C.Paul 38
Curry really looked 35-years old. Like Mahomes he's resorting to the fancy dan shit instead of the basics and its backfiring. He turned the ball over a lot.

Lakers vs Heat.
Austin Reaves may have the least muscle tone in the entire NBA but he has got some ticker. Could even be the Lakers 2nd most effective player. Into everything.
Poor old Lebron. Slogs his arse off all game dragging his bum Lakers within 1 score at the death, charges the lane, kicks out for the corner 3 to.......... Cam Reddish.
Clangg.

It looks like the Sixers won the Harden trade and the era of superteams is over. For some reason I think the Nuggets are going to win it all as long as Jamal Murray comes back the same as he was before he went down.

Finally got to see a Clippers game.
James Harden Russell Westbrick Paul George Kawhi Leonard.
These numbskulls have to find a way to make this work.
10 mins to go vs Nuggets (Jokic out injured) and up by 10 and I said "these dopes are going to lose this". Sure enough, lost by 10. Kawhi had 30 pts but it was an extremely Kobesque 30. Missed a zillion shots and was basically a black hole on offense. I think he passed the ball twice in the whole game. Reggie Jackson was far and away the best player on the court.
Clips problem seems to be the 4 All Stars are all used to being The Man and as such think they can drain any shot as they have done for years. Yet father time seems to have caught up with all 4 at the same time....

Even though it doesn't seem like it, I actually think that the Clippers don't bother to play defense most nights. If I were the coach, I would have been fired for benching everybody on the team. They make terrible teams look good. When they are motivated to defend, well, the Clippers are really good. Twice per the regular season might not be enough to make the playoffs. I would say that the 4 all-stars are more like 4 all-world players so Father Time seems to have warped their will to do the 82-game schedule. If the Clippers make the playoffs, then I will wonder if all the terrible habits of the regular season will crush them. I reckon that the Nuggets with Murray back will nearly impossible to beat. Still, I am usually wrong about these things. I can't watch the games. I just look at box scores. If I could stop that habit of reading box scores, my life would be much fuller. My wife, much missed, would often smile at how I would read over box scores every morning. Decades of practice I would muse to myself. She liked to go the games so we went. The players are so much faster in person. I thought that football was the only sport where seeing it live changes everything. I was wrong. Baseball? No need to see that live unless you have a need for a 10-beer outing, I reckon.

Sixers could use a better bench for their eventual epic battle with Boston, but the SIxers are fucking good for real.

Even though it doesn't seem like it, I actually think that the Clippers don't bother to play defense most nights. On the perimeter they seemed to give it the ol' college try but in the paint? Matador stuff. If the Clippers make the playoffs, then I will wonder if all the terrible habits of the regular season will crush them. They seem completely uncoached and possibly uncoachable. The only bright spot was Westbrick who seems to have realised he has no shooting touch whatsoever but is still pretty much unstoppable when he drives the lane.

I love Westbrook. If the rest of the team had his spirit, the team would shoot 50 free throws a game at least. The "Matador Interior Defense" just reminds me of why I don't watch. I grew up with the "no layup" rule. I remember having fights on the court when I played. I got suspended a few times over the years for protecting my teammates, who to this day still have my back. Professional basketball is full of owners who couldn't inspire me to show up for lunch, but what would I expect from a league ruined by television contracts and "fans" worldwide who want more offense? Fuck me. My nephew's best friend plays for Purdue, who are ranked number one. Yeah, I'll be watching the Boilermakers, which is the same college that four of my cousins attended. If Purdue wins it all, I will actually be happy for real. Where I went to college, well, we'd be lucky to play .500 basketball this year and into the future. If I had moved to L.A. like I was supposed to, I'd be at every UCLA/USC/Loyola Marymount home game I could get tickets to. Fuck the Lakers and Clippers. When they have a brawl like the Pistons and Pacers did, which was totally justified in my opinion, I'll know that somebody gives a shit in L.A. There is more life in Death Valley than at any of the pro basketball games in L.A. Rant over, drugs taken, and so on.

One game a day live in the mornings on SkyTV and I watch the full replay later that night BUT after the thrill of the opening weeks it's sort of dawning on me that there are NBA reg season games..... and there are NBA reg season games. And I have to somehow decide when to cut bait on the dog games. The ones where they look like they're playing hard but really it's just a contractually obligated faux effort mailed in to an 82 game exhibition season. Sometimes its obvious in the opening minutes. Sometimes it takes ma a quarter. Sometimes I'll get to the 3rd quarter before it dawns on me, "heyyyy these doffuses are just taking turns trading baskets..."
It's difficult to really know whats going on there. There must be algos for this. Betting algos. Last game of a 4 consecutive road game trip or some shit. Some guy just got his big contract and no longer has to play his arse off. The bench are shit and aren't going to usurp you in the starting lineup. All sorts of variables us casual punters who tune in without reading the goss dont know about. Some pricks are carrying injuries but hide it and cant jump for shit. eg, tuned in to see Memphis with D.Rose. He's 35 but still moves very well. Obviously he now has to jump like a normal human compared to 2011 when he was basically bouncing. Anyway I watched him and on D he gives it the ol college try but if someone is past him.... he gives up. Cuts his losses, heads upcourt, play's over for him. No interest in a rebound attempt. Your turn, my turn. I find myself giving up on those games. That shit NEVER happens in the NFL. They will bench your ballz and move on to the next no-name big black motherfucker if you can't be arsed.

Was going to watch the Warriors versus the Clippers game. Saw the score after the first quarter and logged in here instead. The Clippers don't seem engaged. I thought that they might be. They would be exciting if they actually played defense.
The "D. Rose" problem discussed above is the reason, I reckon, for such boring basketball. If the open path fouls stopped being called, then I would feel like the league was saying to the players that you are your own out there so prepare accordingly. It's a league-wide problem. Softness is rewarded again and again so why play hard? The players are smarter than I will ever be. They know that the league wants more offense, higher scoring games, and a "feel good" vibe in the buildings. Dreadful. I want Rick Mahorn to make life miserable for anybody who comes close to him on offense or defense.

basketball was not a thing at all in australia when i was a kid. very popular these days. my 13 yr old says it is the best sport. i tried watching it with him but i don't understand the rules and the commentary seems way over the top for what i see happening on the court...court, thats the correct term, isn't it?
