I thought I saw that there was no real increase in suicides in Gringolandia but who knows. Japan obviously has a cultural predilection for suicide so it makes sense. You heard about the conspiracy about the three or so actors who committed suicide this year? I work at home and could still walk my dog twice a day, so even during the most severe lockdown here in Saigon, I was barely inconvenienced except I couldn't go to dumb bars and waste dumb money watching dumb EPL matches...But it was over so quick and seems like so long ago now...

You heard about the conspiracy about the three or so actors who committed suicide this year? Heard their astrological sign of Pisces coincided with the greek azimuth of Confucius birthdate of 0202 which foretold oh fuck off who am I kidding I have no idea. It is a highly addictive narrative. Thankfully my cable channels lost the rights 2 years ago which has freed me from its "More Football, More Now!" narrative. Quite relaxing flopping on the sofa to veg out before the baize as the whole "Escobar... back to Pablo... back to Escobar..." thing meanders along though. During my peak addiction phase I was avoiding weekend scores so I could span out on half-employed Mondays and watch 4 entire match replays back to back. Yes, 9am to 5 pm non-stop. Don't think I've ever try and watch it at the pub though.

What is the deal with America? Wife's insurance expired and, being a dumbass, I thought ok, let's do the easiest thing, COBRA, which lets you continue whatever you had for 18 months.
$1600/mo.
Seriously; significantly more than my rent is the recommended amount to pay so that, if anything goes mildly wrong, I don't die.
Fucking joke country.
Through some other twists, turns, and expenses, I believe I can round this down to $900-$1100/mo, still waiting on an email.
So look, squid porn? Yeah, it's weird. But if that's one of the major downsides I would say Japan is still a pretty sweet country.

Here in Japen I had an MRI on my busted knee and, with insurance covering 70%, it cost $50.
Googled MRI in the US and, with health insurance, rockbottom price is $400.
No insurance, you're looking at $2,000-$3,500.

Pro Tip for when using Japanese Post Office to send shit overseas:
NEVER let yourself be served by a MALE postal worker.
NEVER.
It is guaranteed to add 5 minutes to your time in the post office.
The women staff, they weigh your shit, tabulate the cost in the machine, and you pay the postage.
The male staff, irrespective of how long they have been in the employ of the Post Office (most definitely on a higher rate of renumeration than the lowly womenfolk) are almost taken aback at the very presence of the machine to calculate postal rates. "This thing? Is that what this thing is for? You now want me to actually operate this thing?" They then have a couple of token pokes of a button or two. Nothing magical happens. The closet door to Narnia does not burst open. Harry Potter's secret train platform does not reveal itself. My records box is still sitting on the scales. The dude frowns. Pursed lips. I've seen it soooo many times. The dumbarse will start surreptitiously looking around for a woman postal worker to assist them in 3... 2... 1... BAM, right on schedule. You check your watch. Yes, the ordeal has begun.
It could be the guys first day on the job. It could be his millionth day. It makes no difference. The rigmarole is always the same. His panicked expression says "you mean part of my job is to operate this elaborate time machine? Just a minute, I just have to make a telephone call."
I am not shitting you. The dude today actually had to call someone about the whole "holy shit, someone wants to send some parcel or something from here? At the Post Office? Is that what we do here? Dude wants to know how much the postage will cost and - get this- he wants us to do something about it. I think it's related to this number pushy button calculation computey contraption next to the scales?"
Every.
Fucking.
Time.

I kind of miss that, having to strategize a day to day errand. When I moved and wanted to update my info at the bank, I knew not to look up the kanji for "change of address form" and open with that. Also you gotta watch out for 1) gaijin enters, run frantically to fetch the "English speaker" 2) old guy.
Just takes a minute to plan out basic sentences and explain "Hello, I have an account here." (I am not a tourist trying to interact with American dollars.) "I used to live in [town.] Now I moved to this town."
Then they hand you the change of address form.
Maybe I liked living in Japan because I felt smart managing to do basic things.

Need to canvass the foriis common sense on this one as i cant decide if it was mental or sensible.
Remembers Japans 100,000 yen ($1,000) nationwide bailout a while back? Mine vanished into sensible boring shit like food and rent. BUT one bloke at the mental clinic, in his 50's, never had a job in his life, a lifelong sickness beneficiary who lives entirely on our tax $$$$... well, he blew the whole 100,000 yen on.... a toy robot dog. And thats just the downpayment. The plastic little fucker cost 200,000 yen.
At first I thought what a comically absurd waste of money.
BUT.
Maybe thats what we were supposed to do? Buy extravagant shit to stimulate the economy?
I cant decide.
Surely it was shit-for-brains mental to blow ALL his money on that. That is fucking MONTHS of food.
BUT. The toy robot dog makes the dude giddy with happiness. He's not really a fullblown radio rental, just a bit simple thats all.
In hindsight, I should have "invested" all 100K in a fuckoff HUGE box of wholesale records from JesusLand. Keep half and and see how many I can sell and distro and turn the 100K into more $$. Although haha, wouldve been a bit "sorry Japan but ALL the 100K has been whisked offshore, fuck your economy and fuck you"

I saw something online about how someone is spending their US $600 stimulus on a Real Housewives wig and I was like, really? Maybe not everyone should have this money to spend if their going to waste it like that; all the people who don't need it, it should be reallocated so people who really need it get bigger cheques, but maybe it stimulates the economy? I don't know. A toy robot is way better than a Karen Huger wig though.

Must be some poxy ferries that go over for day trips or some shit. I want to defect! I will sell state secret to highest bidder. I will become valuable asset in struggle against imperial west. Also just read the mindfuck factoid that "Vladivostok" there is closer to AUSTRALIA than it is to Moscow. WFTTT

The idea of visiting Vladivostok has always intrigued me. I knew a JET CIR from Vladi when I lived in Shimane. Served special forces in Afghanistan so maybe PTSD explains his immediately jumping into an affair with another married JET ~ American so good on ya kokusai koryu...There was another JET, big ol strapping farm boy from Nebraska or something. Married but almost immediately starts an affair with a supermarket cashier on Oki-no-Shima. Kinda like Danang, famous for bridges and that's about it... www.rbth.com/travel/2015/03/09/eight_secrets_of_vladivostok_for_travelers_to_the_worlds_edgeHere is the bridge to Russky Island, south of the city. Watch carefully from the beginning:

The idea of visiting Vladivostok has always intrigued me. Guessed it would be a frozen Siberia yet weirdly it seems to get bugger all snow. That border with China is long as shit and seems to be mainly in the arse ends of nowhere. How the fuck do the Novochiks and the Dongers police that shit?

We have had a minor outbreak here in Vietnam in a few locations, right before Tet New Year's Holiday started, so on various levels of "lockdown" here and mostly up north. This weird-ass case popped up today. Thank you Japan(?)
He also visited some restos in Hanoi...Maybe the final test was false, and cause of death was something else. He was 54 or so...Or maybe he had mild symptoms and was scared to deal with the Viet. authorities.

Ya also need a samurai sword to kill the 10-inch mukade, cats for the rats, dogs for the tanuki and wild boar. Oh, and you ever live in a place with a septic tank? But otherwise, 4 million makes it almost thinkable...

But otherwise, 4 million makes it almost thinkable... Of course, the idea all falls apart once you start factoring in the pesky real world details. The worst would be the fucking balsawood walls and freezing your arse off 24/7. Camp Leaders inlaws house in Chiba is the coldest place I have ever been in my life. You just never warm up. The heater is on in 1 room which they all sit in, the rest of the house is FROZEN. I like to think I'm a bit of a hard cunt living in minus 20 degrees Hokkaido but FFS, that Chiba shithole house broke my will to live. I was wearing my DOWN JACKET to fucking bed. japanpropertycentral.com/2020/05/setagaya-has-the-largest-number-of-akiya-empty-homes-in-japan/FFS, Yubari, that place is like some sort of dystopian walking dead hellscape social experiment. "What happens when babies stop popping out and old people just keep getting older and older and older and just never fucking die? Let's take a look at this once booming town in Japan..."www.theguardian.com/cities/2014/aug/15/yubari-japan-city-learns-die-lost-population-detroit#:~:text=Known%20in%20its%20heyday%20as,its%20population%20in%2050%20years.&text=From%20a%20peak%20of%20just,and%20the%20last%20miners%20fled. 120,000 pop in 1960, now 5 fuckign thousand. ffs article is 6 years old by now, that 5,000 peeps is probably halved again by now. I kind of want to go there and rubberneck at the hopeless crushing desolation of the human spirit being slowly extinguished in real time LOLLL

Has potential once you get rid of the ancient kissaten smell and furnishings...You can easily imagine very elderly Japanese padding very slowly back and forth, from room to room because they forget what they wanted to do once they get there...I imagine the Chinese are buying a lot of these places up...
ETA: I will look it up, but I think tatami makers/repairers are a very dying breed...
