Sadly, Abe never seemed to realize he was playing with fire. So many hardline conservatives here remind me of Abe. Their faith in "tradition" is too religious-like for me.

Wild news. My first thought was hmm, in the US, "shot" is a normal headline. Where'd this clown get a gun? "Home made gun." Wow. The people you see out and about are for the most part the normal (by Japanese standards) ones. The ones you DON'T see, the whole hikkomori, 2-chan, conservative, OCD, mental, no treatment ones -- that's the scary stuff.
Random associated memory: Around the end of my time there, maybe 2010, I went to meet some friends at Koganei park. Had a smartphone, am an idiot. I could not find these fools and that's a big ass park. And I was walking and walking and it's hot and humid and I saw this little bench facing away from me about 100 yards in the distance with 1 person on it dressed entirely in black sitting perfectly still holding a black parasol and it gave me the creeps in a way I cannot begin to describe. I'm thinking.... you had to put a LOT of time and effort into this one-person audienceless show. You got all dressed up, took the train presumably, then had minimum 30 mins walk to sit, by yourself, in the middle of a huge park, on a bench, dressed in black, holding a parasol. It basically scared the shit out of me. "Leave" overwhelmed "Snap a quick photo first."
Should this person be detained and questioned?
First of all, yes.
Second of all, no. It's not illegal to be weird and in theory, I support it.
Truly random memory there. I don't have a conclusion. I guess there's "normal" "Japan weird" where you dress like a goth loli and go to karaoke. This just gave me a very unusual bad chilling feeling. Mission accomplished for that person!

Where'd this clown get a gun? "Home made gun." Wow. tbf the lad did put together some staunch homemade guns ffs they found this mofo at his place Sure as fuck NOT switching on japper telly, guessign there'll be a saccharine sob story on every channel. Although ffs even I am starting to seel sorry for the fascist fuck. Getting shot with a homemade cannon in broad daylight is kind of harsh. maybe a reread of his wiki will restoke the fires of despisal: So basically his family are the Himmlers of Japan. "Just a bunch of loose slags who couldnt resist the charms of sweaty master race 3-inch jungle cock"There, I'm back on the hate train now

Remember when he wanted to get rid of all humanities departments? Or maybe they actually did that. Japan suffered a lot of political violence before WW2, mostly from the right wing, and while not committing assassinations, yakuza thugs have been used to threaten and harass journalists and other politicians. But it's blame the foreigners coming to steal our social security money, the Chinese exchange students/spies...So hopefully it will come out that this SDF assassin was a further right-wing nutter but I don't think it will change anything except make more money for companies providing private protection, probably Yak-related... Of course, the greatest assassination attempt was by a feminist/anarchist that they might not teach about in Japan: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanno_SugakoWe need to make t-shirts of her!

The Dud (no spelling mistake) set out to make Japan unrecognizable. He did so. And he ignored the rather violent undercurrents of his own country. Now, he's dead. Should we be shocked? No. Should we be sad? No. He encouraged the underbelly of Japanese society and its ardent xenophobes to hate all they could. Well, there might be a lesson here, but I'll leave the finer points of that lesson to somebody who gives a shit.

Big ups to the effin' Unification Church for showing up right away in relation to the Abe assassination. Japan now has it's own conspiracy-theory-ripe political assassination. Big ups. That homemade blaster covered up the real assassins' real gun. Look into it... Let's see if it quacks, because the UC, the Moonies, absolutely need to have some light shed on them and their (CIA-funded?) shenanigans...
That's 2004 and I have been reading about their malfeasance since the '80s!
Just glad for no links to China...

Caught an earful about Kishida and his inexperienced Kochi Gang from my local golf pro, aka Wifey, and Kishida looks set to fail.
Maybe he should worry about the tanking yen - Golf Pro said it will hit 150 by year-end last week, Sukebe scoffed, but sitting near 139 now, I say easy peasy...

I'm sure there's a good dose of rose-colored glasses for me but in hindsight I really only recall 2 things I did not care for over there. The humidity, and the smoke. Not sure on the smoke situation... there was talk of banning but maybe "Japan joke ban," I'm not sure and have not been allowed in for several years due to The Global Panedmic. The heat and humidity, I do not miss. It's funny to look back on when I first moved there in 2004, because I mostly focused on stuff I missed from home, like a car, and dishwasher. Now, back in America, I am not interested in either. Do not have, do not want car, do not use dishwasher. There were little moments where you start to realize that the notion of Tokyo convenience is greater than the sum of its parts. Yes, there are a lot of convenience stores and they're always open, but when you realize, oh, I just missed the train, but I need to exit my destination station on the other side, so rather than waiting 2 minutes for the next one, I'll walk to the other end, then the train will be there, then I'll get off right by the exit I want. That's fun! In a dorky efficient way? Or one evening I wanted some kind of cable, quarter inch, 1/8 inch, don't remember, and I realized hmm, bet I can find a place to sell me one of those and be back home within 15 minutes. It as 11 at night. Called a local practice studio to confirm they sold such wires, bought one, home. Chicago is enormous. Wanna go anywhere? 30-45 mins at best. Doesn't really matter how far away it is. Could be a few miles, or 10, it's basically going to be pushing an hour door to door. No wonder I rarely strayed more than a 6 minute train ride from my apartment over there.

Among other life changing experiences from selling all my possessions and moving to the other side of the world and trying to start learning a very foreign language at age 28, I did finally understand money, and the exchange rate. I have 2 comments I would like to make regarding these subjects. 1) You are totally allowed to gamble on the exchange rate. One of the biggest things I learned in Tokyo was hey -- I get paid in yen, but I have the technical ability to spend in dollars. I filled out a ton of paperwork and started gambling. If you have a realistic starting amount you aren't going to make that much, but it's better than vegas and more fun. The first time I made $30 I was like geez, I usually leave the house and do a lesson for this.
2) I have never understood supply and demand more than with the example of rare punk records. There's a middle aged man who lost out on an ebay auction 15 years ago and the record went for $800 and now he'll bid $1500 because -- fuck you. This is the magic. There are only a handful of people who will pay $800 - $1500 for that record. Now the bass player's aunt discovers a box of 50. Incorrect logic says $800 X 50. That is wrong. The market will now reprice this new information. One sells for $800 [or whatever] and there is immediately another copy up -- you are burning through demand. The last 45 [ish] people who will pay any amount for this record are down to like $30. I find this fascinating, but I'm an idiot.

Fucking heat was best dealt with vinyl and not giving a fuck. Exchange rate. Fuck yeah! Becomes an obsession. Wish supply and demand was taught in school much better than it is. Back to the heat. Fuck that shit. Fuck me fuck me fuck me. I would still be living in Hokkaido had I ever bothered to go there but once. What a fucking idiot I am!

Just had a thought. Perhaps this is the wrong thread. Anyway, how can Japanese television suck so bad yet have some great film directors? It's weird to me. I don't know. Perhaps I missed the point of television in Japan, but a fuck of a lot of people watch television for four hours a night or more. Fuck me fuck me fuck me. They must have a high pain threshold.

Sorry for the minutiae but this an interesting background to the Kuril Islands dispute, which an emboldened Russian might set their grubby paws on if Fun Bags Pelosi stumbles into some military provocation of China - "Taiwan ish a free and inde...independ...independable allies of us, the US of U of S...can I have another xannie, this jet lag is killing me..."
Well, at least the yen is rallying, for now...

The heat and humidity, I do not miss. Seems like people still dont really have an image of Japan as a "hot" country? They think of Thailand or Burma or those other sweaty jungle hellholes but not nice safe advanced Japan? 2) I have never understood supply and demand more than with the example of rare punk records. Once one sells for $1500 it is almost impossible for us to recalibrate our ape brains to accepting $30. "But... but. $1500!!" So if you have 50 copies do you just play the lonnnng game and sell 1 copy a year and pray the "zeitgeist" doesnt fuck off to Shelbyville?

I arrived in Japan 25 years ago this week or so. That dense humidity was definitely a solid first impression of the country. That and the special bricks for the seeing-impaired. Japan was once a capitalist country with socialist priorities, as a good friend's mom aptly summed it up to me...but no more. Now I am nearing 10 years here in SE Asia and I guess I am fully acclimated. We went to the Maldives on vacation a few years ago and a Pacific-Northwest couple we met on the diving boat were talking about how the humidity was really noticeable right off the plane, but I was all, "hmmm same same for me..." They also started putting in those sidewalk tiles for the blind here in HCMC but they just end up sitting under all the motorbikes parked on the sidewalks...

I arrived in Japan 25 years ago this week or so. ...........almost the same time as Benny arrived in Japan 24 years ago...........the "rainy season" had just ended and the stinking hot, humid weather had just kicked in........coming from Canada which has low humidity to this steamy country took a lot of acclimatizing............first thing Benny noticed was that everything smelled "moldy"..........welcome to Japan sucker.

Yeah me too, landed in Chiba in 1993 during a TORRENTIAL weeklong storm... but it was about 35 degrees and 100% humidity. Coming from perpetually sunny dry 22 degree NZ I was just completely bewildered. Just could not comprehend that it was this hot... and yet still pissing down with rain. I went for a long walk outside in it in shorts and singlet and jandals. Just utterly flummoxed.

We lived one year in Hanoi and even though it's much further north, the humidity was worse than HCMC. It is somewhat related to Hanoi being kinda an inland valley. Winter was terrible, don't think there was a sunny day for the whole of January to March. Not so cold, but just always grey skies and humid - like it was impossible to air-dry clothing. Mold smell? Everywhere all the time in that funky city...

If the Russkis invade Japan I will instantly switch sides and pretend to be a Russki and start executing Japanese oyajis in the street.
Actually, fuck the oyaji, I'll probably start by marching into the rental agencies for refusing to rent to gaijin for all these years.
"Perestroika, motherfuckers!"
Women should be given equal rights as men, same job opportunities, etc, etc. Of course. But they do exploit their gender when it suits them. eg today, Camp Leader called in sick with a headache.... because she was sleepy after playing mahjong all night. Imagine a Japanese bloke trying that shit on. After about the 3rd time he would be fired, then try it again at his new job, get fired, and be homeless within 6 months.
I'm just sayin'.
Women in Japan ain't advancing because, let's face it, a lot of them are slack motherfuckers when held to the same standards as the men.
